Anyone else find Patrick 'Lights' Leary to be too nice/noble?

I'm watching the series at the moment and enjoying it. But I'm finding Patrick "Lights" Leary to be such a noble and decent character ... unlike everything I've read about any heavyweight boxer, ever.

"Lights" doesn't really have any demons. No drugs, women, vices, etc. Even when he acted as a standover man and fought a guy for money outside a bar, he did so under extreme provaction (like any sane individual would threaten a world heavyweight boxing champion of his age).

I understand that he's supposed to be likeable, but he just feels too saintly. There are some other weird characterisations (Ed Romeo, Hal Brennan, Richard "Death Row" Reynolds), but "Lights" is what sticks out the most.
