What is this a satire of?

On the trailer there were a bunch of quotes from people saying it was brilliant satire.

Of what?

Consumerism, abuse of power, love, corrupt leadership, the concept of family, violence in film, religion, parentalism as well as overparentalism and the 'nature vs nurture concept', pop culture and its effect on society (especially its youth), loneliness, sibling rivalry, technology, patriarchism, totalitarianism, communication in the 21st century, the Greek Orthodox faith, fiction vs reality, mental illness, sex, death and loss, language.
The list goes on and on.

Great question. I imagine that most fans of the film would say "society" or "sexuality" and be pleased with that. I call it pseudo-intellectual masturbation.

reply

Patriarchy, perhaps. That's what kept coming to mind for me.

Its a Satire of how the world shapes itself. When your born into reality you accept things the way they are. You believe that until some sort of catalyst comes into your life that shows you things can be different. For the kids in the movie their parents controlled all the variables, so they just continued to believe the odd customs. The kids accepted their parents as the leaders of the pack, the law, the god of the world they lived in. These days governments seem to have that relationship with their citizens, but it'll always be something.

The movie is satire of comunism. The wall of the house symbolize the wall of berlin.

reply

I was thinking the opposite as it seemed mainly as against Family. Thus abolition of family in Communism. I may think "normal" families in real life.
Also it came to me that visual style is alienating with Distancing Effect which makes sense.

reply

I totally agree that it's satire of communism. I believe the movie was made in Greece because that country was so perilously close to becoming Communist after the Second World War.

Think of the dogtooth (or loss of) as being equivalent to the apple in Eden.
