Racist?

I haven't seen this film yet, but it has stirred up quite a lot of debate here in Sweden, whereas a lot of cultural-know-it-alls claim the film is racist since it shows five black kids robbing three white kids. The film is apparently based on real events, so my question is: is this film racist if it shows what happened?

It's not racist - it's honest. What would be weird would be if they made a movie about these robbers and suddenly the robbers were white.

I haven't seen it because what Ruben Östlund is saying is that it's WHITE peoples' fault that black people get into situations like this (i.e. rob people). He says it's the racist society in Sweden which see black people as more dangerous. This comment made me so sick I had trouble watching the movie on the cinemas where I read in a paper about 'Play'.

Yea same here, people are being politically correct to a fault in Sweden nowadays.

Whats that on your face!

reply

That's weird since I can't imagine anyone having sympathy for the perps in this movie. In fact, I suspect most any audience would have rejoiced to see them all beaten to a single giant pulp. They were so obnoxious and devoid of any redeeming features excepting perhaps devilish cleverness. There wasn't one scene in which Swedes were depicted as racist - if anything they were shown as naively trusting to the extent that it becomes a health hazard. Maybe the director is a secret skinhead working under PC cover ;)

Well I don't agree with you. I think it was obvious that they, atleast some of them, felt bad deep inside. I think that it came up to the surface when they got there pizza's and got quiet. The problem with this kind of group (according to my own experience bcoz i've been a part of one) is that they always compete within the group who is the leader, or the toughest, which of course makes it impossible to show real emotions or regrets infront of each other. But i can promise you that when the lights goes out and they go to bed, atleast a few of them will be crying. The second part is that I think it's often that they really don't have so many other things in common. It's the bad stuff they do, that keeps the group together. That's why they were beating up their friend. According to my experience, it's not so often childhood friends, a football crew or classmates that gets together like this, rather a group of boys (and sometimes girls) that feel lika outcasts in the society, that has been proven from school time and possibly in the family that nobody recognize them for anything positive they do. So what will they do to be recoqnized then? Yes, the will be bad!

Very interesting and I agree. I'm not where you are disagreeing with me though. I was responding to the previous poster who claimed that the director's stated intentions were to depict Swedish society as racist.

I wouldn't say that Östlund is trying to say that it's white peoples' fault. I interpreted the last (or next to last) scene as to hint that the policital climate in Sweden forces us to simply view blacks or immigrant as victims, no matter what they have done. Anyway, kudos to him for not shying away from depicting the all too common criminality among immigrants.

It is based, maybe, on a true story. The author of this film wants parents to know that they have to increase their children's protection and to keep the contact with them as close as possible.

Of course the black guys can rob the white ones because the black ones are walking in crews.

You won't see five, six or many swedish white guys to keep that very closer conversations like the black ones keep.

One good thing to know, is that the swedish people are owning Sweden. Everyone have to remember that. So, if the black ones are getting installed in Sweden, they won't have money as much as the swedish people have. It's weird one swedish guy to rob a black guy because the swedish guy already has money, things, etc.

In the anatomic way, the black body is more higher than the white one. And more powerful.

Hopefully this reply can make you understand that this movie isn't a racist one, the author just wants the parents to take care of their children, in my opinion, of course.

So this is a public education film, not a movie based on real events as stated.

What utter nonsense, white guys don't walk in groups? since when? Next you'll be saying white guys don't bully.

if it's the truth it's not racist.

It wouldn't be a racist if it wasn't based on real events. Not the way this film is made.

It's about socially regressive Government's that import this unnecessary problem into a country against the will of the people and this being the consequence of their actions. They call you racist for highlighting the truth.

did you also watch it on channel4, etspettroll?
