The way Meris was being treated and judged, first of all, was inappropriate. Not to say what she did was right, but when you drive someone to their breaking point without acknowledging it or caring about the consequences of your actions, you should probably expect something bad to happen to you in return. If for no other reason, such as empathy, compassion or goodwill, you should treat others as if they're human beings simply for fear of what they could do to you. (For instance, menses > shovel to the head, which honestly, I thought that's where the movie was headed.)
Though, it's too bad that Meris had to have a breaking point and that she didn't immediately realize that her husband did her the biggest favor by leaving her, and that she wasn't meant to be married by a judgmental, inconsiderate, racist doormat.
