A truly funny movie

I saw this movie at a preview this evening and was not really expecting much. I figured that if they are giving free admission (from Air Miles), perhaps the production is lame. I sure was wrong. This was the funniest movie I have seen in years--truly funny. It did not have to resort to bathroom humour nor did it have gratuitous violence or swearing. I highly recommend this movie. (And stay behind and watch the credits for hilarious out-takes.)

ok thanks for the tip......I love witty comedies...not all of them have to be grotesque in bathroom violence (however a little bit is pretty funny) hahahaha.....I'm not sure....i feel like Canadian comedy on the outside seems very simple but really when you look at line execution it's pretty detail orientated making it more mature.....dare i say mature and fart joke in the same sentence???

I was at a preview in Toronto last night as well (thanks Air Miles). The movie? not good at all. I really wanted to like it, but didn't. It just felt like a bad episode of a t.v. western. The jokes fell flat. It looked cheap (good lord--the hair extensions on Paul Gross!). And there really was no story. Very disappointing.

I think comedy is very selective in what people like or want. Like there are sooo many varieties it's hard to really say what works with an audience or not since there are a lot of varied tastes. Like our paper here in London, Ontario said it was great and funny and satrical. So like that'swhat i am looking at, i'm also just going to have some fun and not analyze the entire movie

True, but when an entire theatre is NOT laughing....I think that says something. I'm just glad no one from the cast or crew was there, it would have been embarassing. One person started to clap at the end and no one joined in.

I thought it was pretty good, many of the jokes worked.

Finally, why would someone "want" to like a movie? Movies are entertainment, like 'em or don't like 'em as you wish. Is there some reason you wanted to like it...e.g. someone you know produced it or is in it? Is it about an geographical area you are familiar with? Are you an old west history buff? What?

No story? I'll tell you the story. SPOILER FOLLOWS

A gunman on the run makes it to a small quiet Canadian village where no one is violent or carries guns. He tries his "gunfighter ways" on the town folks but each effort meets with unexpected and funny results. As he mingles with and gets to know the town folks, he slowly realizes the errors of his ways. In the end, he changes his life and finds love. All that with a dose of homey humor. I laughed several times and smile even now as I remember several scenes. Of course it's contrived, unrealistic and cliche...but so what. So are Apple Dumpling Gang, Paint Your Wagon and Cheyenne Social Club.

I don't think it was an awful movie by any stretch of the imagination. But I can honestly say that I did not laugh out loud once. Neither did anyone else in the theater. Of course, when I saw it today in Kitchener, there were only 3 people in the theater, which is a pretty sad turnout. I'm not sure if that's because it's a Western (look at how poorly Appaloosa did two years ago) or because it's yet another Canadian "comedy" starring Paul Gross (hello, does anybody remember how dreadful Men With Brooms was?). In fairness to the film, it had a few enjoyable moments and a couple of moving scenes. The photography and scenery were stunning. Historically, the film seemed authentic. There wasn't anything anachronistic about it. Some of the vocal music in the film sucked. The screenplay was very uneven.

Thumbs up? Thumbs down? Maybe thumbs sideways...

I haven't seen "Gunless" yet, but I have to disagree about "Men With Brooms" which I think is a fantastic movie.

I also must comment that Men with Brooms was really epic! hahah Gunless is no Blazing Saddles because it isn't trying to be. It is a unique mixture of that slapstick and witty comedy that we all know and love and thrown into the mix a sort of romantic comedy! hahaha i know random...i think it does a great job of taking the western and not turning it upside down but simply turning it on it's side.....! I loved it!

My boyfriend and I went to see it last night not really knowing what to expect apart from a western "comedy". What we got was good old fashioned dry humor. Movies as they are today tend to spoon feed you what they promise to deliver. Here, you might have to back track to figure out if it was supposed to a joke or if it was serious. Not everyone likes that humor. I personally like dry humor though. So I definitely caught myself laughing out loud a few times along with my boyfriend. The loan other person in the theater clearly did not share this opinion though as we never heard a peep out him period.
I do agree. It's a worthwhile movie to see. The soundtrack is also worth a listen. :)

I liked how they built up some really dramatic moments, and then experimented on what would happen if some crucial detail went wrong.

Started out funnier than it ended. But still funny, especially if you like westerns and dry comedy... a solid 7/10.

I watched it expecting to groan at another lousy Canadian film. I absolutely detested Men with Brooms, I thought it was idiotic. Yes, Paul Gross's wig or whatever it was was distracting, but that doesn't make a film bad. This was witty and had some truly funny moments. I wouldn't classify it so much as a comedy. If people go to this expecting to laugh out loud throughout, yes, they'll be disappointed. It was a lovely satire on westerns and also portrayed well the Canadian "niceness" that's famous all over the world, and also our rejection of American gun culture and, let's face it, American culture in general.

I think Canadians would get more of the in jokes than viewers in other countries. It was an enjoyable film with some good laughs and I do recommend it, especially to Canadians.

I'm a bit surprised this many posters found it to be truly funny... I didn't get it. It was just an OK movie for me.
