Adams aunt penny

I wonder what exactly was it that Adams aunt was arrested for,

I dont understand why she got taken away and was screaming it isnt your fault. It was quite random if you ask me

True, that scene did turn out to be pretty random. When I first saw it, I thought something totally different was going on, but after seeing this and other similar threads I know my original thought was wrong.

I have a habit of watching movies when I'm sleepy, so I didn't realize it was the aunt in that scene. I thought it was Eden. So I thought that there was some kind of "Pan's Labyrinth" or "Sucker Punch" situation going on, where the upside-down world was just a fantasy in Adam's mind, representing some terrible situation in a "real world" drama. It seemed that this scene with the house burning and all that was a brief look at the "real world" situation, and then we were back in Adam's fantasy. So for whole rest of the film, I was waiting for another glimpse of the "real world story" to get an explanation of what was actually happening.

LOL, well now I know that this explanation is completely wrong and that I was just confused by this weird random scene.

Collective punishment. Your whole family get punished if you commit a crime against the State. Quite common historically, actually.
