Why Did the dad change sides?

Why after the pub scene, when kevin sticks up for his dad, why did his dad suddenly start on kevin? I know he was hitting his mum, but she was only hitting his dad two seconds earlier, so why would he change sides so quick? and all through the film, it hadnt shown his dad hitting him, just his mum, so why did he change?

I was wondering about this too, but in the end I realized it was because the dad had 'extremely low intelligence' (according to the files Kevin checks up on at the end of the story), and also because the mother was basically the tyrant of the household- she beat the dad up too, so he was scared of her. I think he switched sides to save himself, just like a child would do.

Yes, I think that's pretty much it. His father was spineless. He wasn't 'bad' like the mother, he was just easily influenced by her. He only gives his son a kicking when the mum insists on it, otherwise he quite liked his son, even though he was useless.
