How original...

Can you please tell me how many times we have seen this thing in movies? A patriarch dies, his estranged sons and daughters come to his funeral, and are unwillingly forced to stay together for a few days (Why? Can't they just leave after the funeral?), and they fight, and fight, and fight, and at the end, they realize how much they love each other?

I haven't seen the movie, but it's like I've already seen it five times.

It's because Hollywood has been out of ideas for the past decade or so and resort to recycling old premises with new actors.

I respond with my wallet by avoiding these types of "been there, seen it" films and just rent the originals.

Yeah, you'd think all families went through the same thing each time a patriach dies. When my father passed away none of us felt the need to stay in the same house for days on end, sniping at each other or arguing non-stop. How would that be respecting him anyway? All these movies are the same, unfortunately. It would be nice if writers came up with something original for a change.

It does sound cliched as a movie idea, but to be fair its source material is much more memorable, mainly because of Tropper's voice.

It's gonna leave its mark somewhere.

His voice? Did he narrate the book to you? :p

reply

By voice I meant the way he writes. Bad choice of words but you knew what I meant!

It's not bad as a basic premise. Of course, most of the premise is in the relationships and characters, not the general idea of a family being thrown together at a time of change.

How many romantic comedies have been made? A few hundred times more than family movies around a patriarch's death, I think.

Why? Can't they just leave after the funeral?

Because they have to sit shiva for seven days. Or, at least, they are told that. The "why?" is pretty clearly explained in this movie.

So stop watching them lol
