Mothers describing her sex life to children is literally never funny

And I feel like it happens way to often in movies. Who would do that in real life? Just tell her kids about how huge her fathers cock was? How they had sex? It's weird. No one would do that.

The jokes about her new breasts were old before they started.

Totally agree with you. I don't know many American families, but I'm pretty sure the mothers don't sit there telling friends - and her own offspring - about her husband's sexual prowress. Nor would she walk around displaying cleavage bigger than Texas and telling her clearly embarrassed adult son that "they're the same breasts you suckled off as a baby". Is this the best the writers can come up with? We gave up watching it half an hour in, what a waste of time.

Well I don't know about you or you're family but my family talks about sex as any normal subject into a conversation. My family is weird that way... Can't live with them can't live without them but god I love them... Never been a normal family but normal is boring anyway... Cheers to the weird people!

reply

My family is the same. Sometimes there a little too candid, but I don't think it's weird. It's part of our lives and we don't usually go into graphic detail.

My mom asked my brother's new wife if he was being a good lover. She is always asking stuff and saying too much.

reply

Yeah my family must be one of the weird ones as well. We talk about pretty much everything. Especially my mom and me..we're super close. We're a small family but we're pretty dysfunctional and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Rather be boring than disgusting.

Who is Often?

I agree, I never think it's funny, just awkward, inappropriate and embarrassing. I can't imagine anyone wanting to hear about a 70+ year old person's sex life let alone a parent's. Actually, I didn't like any of the characters in this film even though I usually enjoy Bateman very much.

Not only that, but listening in on your sibling's sex in front of a room full of people isn't nice either.

Not quite the same, but I made a tape recording of myself giving my then gf an "O" via Cunnilingus...and my sister's found it, just the fact that they HEARD it MORTIFIED me...needless to say, my family of 5 (both parent, me & 2 sisters) NEVER discuss sexual things of ANY kind with each other.

Funny, I just wrote basically the identical thing on another post here. Except I liked Bateman's character OK, mainly because he didn't seem like someone just trying to shock the hell out of everyone else like the rest of them.

Oh, and, yeah, the mom's sex talk, ugh. Mercifully I don't know anyone's mother who does that. (And when she's talking about her husband's anatomy, she says she misses it. He just died; how could she be missing "it" already? Lame writing...)

reply

Different strokes for different folks. My mother certainly didn't tell me about my father's appendages but we did have candid private conversations as I got older but never ever in front of others.

The thing is in this movie these instances are executed as comedic scenes and I didn't think Jane was funny in them and I do like her as an actress. I had the feeling those scenes were very forced and for me they felt flat.

I enjoyed other parts of the film though especially because of the performances of Adam Driver, Timothy Olyphant and Jason Batemen particularly.

It appears my hypocrisy knows no bounds.

mte. it was awkward, has been done before and is tired. the "humour" of that is lost on me as i don't have graphic sexual discussions with my family, and tbh i don't know anyone who does.
