Makeup.

It's fascinating that this didn't even manage to score a damn nomination for Best Makeup at the Oscars.

Quidquid Latinae dictum sit, altum viditur.

Probably because the makeup in that movie was TERRIBLE. The Caucasian to Asian conversions were laughable, the Asian to Caucasian just creepy, and the age makeups were unconvincing. There were only a few characters that sort of looked right. I was actually thinking while watching, that I hoped it had NOT been nominated for any award involving makeup.

I liked the movie on the whole, it was just in this area that I felt it was lacking. I actually came here looking to see if anyone else felt the same.

I just watched this and I'm quite shocked to see that you are the only post mentioning the Asian "makeup". How frickin horrible. The only acceptable way to have done this were if the movie were a comedy. There is no other reason to have actors pretend to be another race.

I could not take it seriously after that and simply finished due to my amazement at the balls on the Wachowski's, that is assuming Lana hasn't had hers removed.I can't believe this was made in 2012 and not 19-pick a decade. I found it horribly offensive and I'm not Asian.

The point is that the characters get reincarnated, which is why they used the same actors. stop getting so offended at stuff.

did you watch the film or not bother because you were too disgusted at the asian make up?

reply

I agree derrenetienne, I also think it would be more offensive if it was used solely for comedic purposes. I think they did a marvelous job for what they were trying to accomplish... something that's never been done before and is the whole point of the film.

Initially seeing some of the characters is indeed a bit silly, yet the blockbusters of today are in my opinion even worse... I personally find certain CGI effects silly as well as this culture's obsession with superheroes and their ludicrous outfits. I just feel if you're going to critique the make up, consider their undertaking, consider the point of the film, and consider where the rest of the industry is in terms of make up, costumes and effects.

I hate to bash LOTR, but my example in comparison is Gollum. He looks ridiculous to me, and again I personally have a bias towards CGI because I feel the industry relies too heavily on it considering that we still have a long way to go in perfecting it. Anyway my point is, this is indeed a Sci-Fi film, and certainly not the most laughable in terms of effects.

Heh yeah usually the people being offended on behalf of Asians aren't Asians. Go figure.

reply

Yeah totally agree about the yellow-face stuff. Stupid of them not to cast different actors to play the different races... it's easy enough to show the audience that it is the same reincarnated person/character through a birthmark, mole, pendant, etc. rather than the horrible and creepy make-up.

The Caucasian to Asian conversions were laughable,

Yeah. I actually thought they were supposed to be aliens or something. It wasn't until I recognized the actors that realized they were supposed to be Asian.

the Asian to Caucasian just creepy,

Very uncanny valley.

Can't stop the signal.

reply

Yeah. I actually thought they were supposed to be aliens or something.

Hahaha same here.

I didn't find the makeup offensive though. I mean yeah I'm a different Asian ethnicity. Not South Korean like the characters were supposed to be. But I could see what they were trying to do.

At first I thought that some sort of genetic engineering in the future had caused all of them to look like aliens but then as it went on I realised it was just bad makeup+CGI.

I agree. This, IMO, was the worst Oscar snub ever.
