I haven't read the book but just based on how the movie felt and looked...I can already tell it didn't do the book all it's justice. Just based on the look.
First of all, the lack of adequate makeup even if it was professional and probably took hours, I think there are simpler methods these days that look better.
Or they could've digitized some of it perhaps like The Social Network, Captain America or Benjamin Button which may have cost more though but might've looked great. Though I have seen Twilight Breaking Dawn Part 2 try to do the digital face thing and they did a sh*t job.
Could also have changed the pitch of the actor's voice for gender change, but I get that they wanted to rely on practical effects or something, but everything else looks blue screened and fake, so why not?
Then you really need to read the book. A lot of the make-up (especially the fake asian makeup) was done that way on purpose. In the book, they called it 'face scaping' and it was a fashion in the Neo Seoul future.
But go ahead and continue telling us how the film didn't do the book justice, without having read it.
Yup! In twenty years' time, it'll still be an incoherent mess that was edited with a Cuisinart, featuring some of the worst performances Tom Hanks has ever given.
However, in twenty years, it's possible that some good director will get ahold of some good actors and good editors, and make the great version of "Cloud Atlas" that it's possible to make.
