*SPOILERS* Review - I found this game to be better than the film itself.

SPOILERS

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen - The Game on the PlayStation 3

After playing the game through recently, I came to the conclusion that it is a better sequel to the original film than its live-action counterpart.

1) The Autobot twin characters (Skids and Mudflap) are not included which gives the storyline and other characters in the story much more credibility and generally creates a more serious tone which I believe to be more fitting.

2) The character of Jetfire is treated with much more dignity than the film. Instead of a senile comic relief character, he is portrayed as a much more respected mentor offering relevant advice when needed and just a grumpy old machine.

3) The focus is on the Transformers themselves and not the human side of affairs - how the government deals with extraterrestrial activities effectively reducing the robots' story to subplot material. The battles themselves were between the Autobots and the Decepticons, not like the film's Decepticons vs. the Military feat. The Autobots angle.

4) Optimus Prime wasn't killed off halfway through affairs. In the film Optimus Prime is put out of action halfway through, a move which I found predictable given the formula of sequels (Han Solo at the end of Empire Strikes Back, Captain Jack Sparrow in Dead Man's Chest). I suppose it was suitable for Jetfire to die at the blade of Megatron in the game, which not only gave him a poignant death - he did assist Prime directly in the penultimate battle - but also gave Optimus the chance to HAVE A ROLE to play in the entire plot rather than the beginning and the end.

5) There were scenes of the Decepticons actually talking to each other in relation to the story.

HOWEVER there are some issues that I found to be amiss in the game such as few too many playable characters in single player on both sides (Sideswipe, Arcee, Jolt, Rampage, Devastator, and Ravage).

All in all, I found the game to be a vast improvement over its predecessor which I found to be to 'detached' to its source material as a tie-in game and little more than an interactive advertisement for the original 2007 film ("You have unlocked movie stills, toy packaging art, movie trailers!"). That said, the film that Revenge of the Fallen game is based on is vastly inferior to the originally film based on the points I addressed above, so I suppose if you are looking for a worthwhile follow up to the original blockbuster then you are better off playing this game.

8/10
