The father must have (spoilers)

I'm watching this for the tenth time and the father must have heard the young boy repeatedly say "stop bouncing the ball." I know he was upstairs on the phone but I can't believe he didn't hear the ball bouncing or the boy say stop. Personally. I think he wanted to abuse the son because the father hadn't elevated to abusing the little girl. Even if the boy said nothing, I think the father would've blamed him anyway.

[Can I add again that the little girl needed her behind disciplined! I remember the movie "Enough" with J Lo. Remember how the girl was loyal to daddy but after a couple of incidents, she changed her tune!? She was younger than this brat!]

Yes, I think you are right.

Couldn't agree more. That little girl drove me nuts. She barged through the whole film just doing what she wanted and the mother did nothing. What an unsympathetic family.

YES!!!

I can't believe he didn't hear the ball nor the son saying stop bouncing the ball.

the entire time I was screaming, move away from the area if she won't listen to you...or tell dad that she is not listening to you and she is bouncing this obnoxious ball. remove yourself from the area. exonerate yourself from the situation.

but the entire movie is based on the stupidity of the mother. if she wanted sole custody of her kids and him not to have any visitation rights, then she should have had her son take the stand. it is obvious that he hated him, so why not have THAT be your TICKET OUT???

Oh Thank you God! Thank you so BLOODY much!Basil Fawlty

I was watching this movie just now but I am going to miss the ending. Anybody want to spoil it for me?

To your first point, the father would have just found another reason to hurt the boy. He knew that the boy had told her to stop. He obviously heard the ball because it was annoying him while he was on the phone, something breaking was just the point where he couldn't ignore it anymore.

Rest in Peace Lee Thompson Young. An angel gone too soon.

Here's the thing, though. Most likely, he would have received the blame anyway. He was the one the father singled out for abuse. Even if he'd said that she'd been the one to break the vase, and had been bouncing the ball, the father would likely have blamed him for not preventing her from breaking the vase.

Abusers have their own "reasons" for why they beat the people they beat, and leave other family members alone. The book, "A Child Called It," is a very good example of a family where one child was abused, but the rest were left alone. Further, the spouse of the abuser did NOTHING to stop the abuse, even though he clearly knew it was going on. It was as though the spouse was afraid of the abuser as well.
