Did you want to ?

Slap that little girl up side the head several times??!! I sure did. I'm sure that was an intentional reaction wanted from the audience but I found myself practically screaming at the tv...a few no so nice words!

reply

-Though I know many responses will be, "...but she's just a little girl," I still think she needed to be firmly handled. By that I mean her mom should have had a talk with her explaining the danger they were in, That her father's anger was unhealthy. When they went underground, the mother definitely should've expressed how important it was to be discreet and careful or lots of people would get in trouble! Granted she didn't understand all that was happening but even small children can pick up when something isn't right, especially when the other parent is being abused or hurt. I grew up in a household where my father was abusive only to my mom and I adored my father because he was very loving to me. BUT I recognized when my mom was hurt and I didn't adore him at those times. In fact, I was protective, for as much as I could be.

-Also seeing her brother being abused should've scared the little girl to where she would've been less protective of her father. I cringed when she told her mom, "you hurt Daddy!"

-This is one moment where I thought the mom should've left the child with the father but he probably would've starting abusing her and regardless of the child's knowledge, they must always be protected.

Definitely! What a brat! If she'd listened to her brother the entire initial incident would have been avoided. Of course, then there wouldn't have been a movie, haha. If she'd listened to her mother their safe house wouldn't have been exposed. That "you hurt daddy" remark was ridiculous. What child who'd just seen her brother beaten isn't going to be frightened by her father? So completely annoying in the beginning.

Thankfully, as the movie went on, she was a more sympathetic character. I feel like the writers went out of their way to create a group of unlikeable characters, or else they are simply clueless.

Yeah, that girl had serious discipline issues. The combination of an inattentive jerk dad and a young, ditzy, clueless mother means that the girl is a spoiled brat with no concept of how the world works nor how to take a cue. That kind of brings me to one of my gripes with the story. If the stupid mom had allowed her son to testify, the abuse from her husband would've been made clear. The son clearly needs years of therapy and counseling, since he has anger issues of his own what with his shoving his sister around in an attempt to discipline her. I sincerely doubt he's gonna get it now that the 3 of them are gonna be stuck in the Canadian Underground for who knows how long.

That kind of brings me to a 3rd point, are the FBI just all of a sudden powerless to investigate or extradite the mother from Canada? The ending of the movie was so rushed and kind of left in the air..literally.

reply

It really was left up in the air. I got the feeling that perhaps the Ray Liotta character had never communicated to anyone that the destination was Canada - but I could be wrong.

i agree about the FBI thing and certainly the ending. i couldn't quite make out whether ray liotta lived but it looked like he did. perhaps he eventually went after the woman on his own to start a fresh life. it was a pretty good movie i'd say.

someone asked earlier about the abuse of the boy...i believe it was physical abuse like they showed when the idiot daughter didn't listen to the son with the soccer ball.

reply

Oh, my goodness (oh, wait, OMG)! The mother didn't let him testify but then got upset with the attorney wondering how the father got joint custody! Really? Any mother could allege their ex-husband was abusing the kid kid(s) and ruin visitation for him. Hello? The purpose of the child testifying. I understand the need to protect your child but this was one instance the case wouldn't work in her favor without the testimony. Because of the mom's naivete, I'm gonna go out on a limb and believe her lawyer told her this but she probably told him NO!

This was mentioned somewhere but when Ray or maybe it was the other guy started yelling about how they were exposed, the little girl still seemed clueless to everything. She would look sad for a minute but then it was back to playing games. I'm sorry, children, even at a young age, feel guilt even for situations they cannot control. I think maybe the mom not disciplining or even talking firmly to the little girl is the cause of this.

*EDIT: The movie is on again and I'm gonna watch it again hollering at the same people! LOL

YES
I would have told her and meant it that the next time she disobeyed and got them in trouble, she would be left behind
It was hard to gauge her age because the actress's age isn't included in her IMdB profile, but she looked old enough to be told firmly and be able to understand

Her actions set up the situation that got that father killed
That should have been strongly explained to her

I only caught the 2nd half, so how was the father abusing the son?
I saw him shove the mother

You just don't know, until you know....

reply

She was outrageously disobedient and was clearly old enough to be disciplined.

reply

OMG, that little girl was incorrigible! I couldn't believe that the mother NEVER disciplined her. She caused the death of one of the fathers in hiding, got them in trouble by acting up all the way through the story.

I assumed she must be related to a producer of the film. I can't believe her part as written that way. Although the mother was not the brightest bulb in the room. I found it very hard to sympathize with them. I kept wondering if the father really abused the son. How could you take that mother's word?

Why Ray Liotta chose this film, I don't know. What an aggravating mess to watch.

reply

Do you realy belive that the little girl got her hands in the script and/or acted on her own without knowledge to the director of the movie? I also feelt hard to sympathize with the stupid mother and her lack of action towards the little girl for her stupid misstakes that are repeating themselfs through the movie - and im sure this was not an intention from the director.

Clearly the director of this movie did a poor job directing the role of the little girl. This and other criticism to the poor response of the mother when it comes to action by the little girl takes the realism out of this movie. This is too bad, because law abuse, and other abuse are real and a every day thing to too many children and families around the world.

Excuse my bad english, but im sure you all get my points, without pointing out that english is not my native laungage.

reply

Absolutely. She was a total brat, not cute to me at all.
