Put it this way, when he's walking down the street, hand in hand with Santiago, people don't realise, see or understand what he is doing.🐭

They didn't hug in public areas of heavy pedestrian traffic. The hand-holding scene or when Santiago helped Miguel off the fishing boat, would've looked like Miguel had his fingers curled or was extending an arm out for balance, respectively. The major hugs and intimate interaction were on the private beaches/areas.

The filmmaker likely did not show us these moments of the invisibility, since we could use our imaginations and it kept the focus on the relationship...on the two of them in a safe, non-homophobic little world. Otherwise, it may've seemed too comedic and removed to have shown it from a non-Miguel point of view.
