I've seen this film before... It was called The Matrix

The original Matrix, not counting the sequels, was based of Jean Baudrillard's book Simulation and Simulacra and posited a Postmodern view on how our society is 'manufactured'... or should we say how our perception of society is manufactured. Judging from the trailer, Branded is just taking that core premise, and using it to criticise modern marketing and consumerism.

It looks good. The Matrix had the potential for going down a more serious and thought provoking avenue but totally dropped that ball. Apart from the crap CGI, Branded looks like it could be a good followup to those ideas.

Like others on this board have said, this is closer to They Live than The Matrix.

I thought of the Matrix when I saw it on TV.

I liked part 1 and did not like part 2 or 3. Those two were more like video games. Too much one on one fighting and not enough story..

I am willing to give Braded a chance.

The Matrix was pure genius. 2 and 3 were flawed, but the first one was mind-blowing.

Not the first one. The first one was pure genius. Perhaps younger people who weren't around or who are only judging the movie by looking back on it, they may be mistaken like that. However, those of us who were alive and saw it in the theatre were blown away. The second and third films had their flaws though.

This looks nothing like The Matrix.

agreed... as soon as people are "reminded of something" they rush to forums to make the same tired cliche comment of "I saw this when it was called...." as if this is a revolutionarily clever thought

and its always based on whatever narrow frame of reference they have. So why Matrix? Why not Blade Runner? Why not Metropolis? Why not *any* dystopian future vision? they're all going to look similar. Thats why its a genre.

How about Brazil? How about Dark City? How about Gattaca? How about Inception? How about anything based on anything written by Philip K Dick or William Gibson? How about nearly every anime derived from any of that work?

Or why not tie it to vaguely common visuals from the same region? How about "this looks like Night Watch/Day Watch"?

To me it looks original and worth checking out.
