Is there evidence the final cut was butchered?

I like this movie because it's so oddball and off the wall and the message is nice, but it seemed like it was HEAVILY cut to the point of absurdity. We've seen movies have 'Director's Cut' surface well after the release of a movie and it takes on a completely different tone (i.e. Donnie Darko) so is there anything pointing out that this movie, even though independent, was butchered by the distributor?

I saw the Russian release and American release and both were identical except the English language was subtitled and Russian speech was not, so there's no evidence that it was re-cut for American release...

There was so much weird editing in the movie and unsolved sub-plots that it screams 'studio intervention'.

I'm not saying a director's cut could completely fix the movie's weaknesses, but it would be interesting to see the 'real version' if, indeed, it was re-cut.

Thoughts?
