I feel sorry for your impoverished sensibilities which put everything on the actor. In case you have been living under a rock for 50 years, actors are actually the best part of movies nowadays. It's the writing and scripts, and sometimes the direction that sucks. This is why so many high-profile actors are working in tv now--because it's so competitive to be in movies. Because most all Hollywood actors you've ever heard of are serious professionals, much better than most actors out there. So whenever someone complains about actors, they appear ignorant of the other factors that make up a movie: writing, casting, script, direction, music, costumes, set design, cinematography, special effects..to make an intelligent comment about actually why a movie might not be compelling. This is because most people can recognize actors, and so they are easy targets when the movie is bad. I just got done watching the Oscar-winning "Lincoln", which I thought was a total snooze-fest! But did I blame Daniel Day-Lewis? Heck no, he's great. This movie was much more interesting than Lincoln. And the script was pretty good, I thought--lots of sharp things were said; it was an intelligent script, not full of cliches or fluffy banter.
As for Sobieski, she was great in Night Train, so I don't know what you're talking about.
