The Marentue Itself

I'm not too sure of the logic behind sending the young men at their prime working and earning age away from the village. That seems to defy reason since if true then it's something that's been around far a long time. Back when they needed as many strong young men to farm why would they send them away to a life they may never come back from? I just don't understand it.
