Overall.....Merantau Sucks! Possible Spoiler.

I don't get it. Merantau or Merantau Warrior or whatever you want to call it sucks overall. There are some decent fight scenes but I wasn't satisfied when the movie ended. Iko Uwais is a bargain basement Tony Jaa and this flick reminds me of the Brucesploitation era after Bruce Lee's death and the Jackie Chan clones that popped up when Snake In The Eagle's Shadow and Drunken Master blew up. After Jaa arrived, every Tom, Dick, & Harry in Thailand started making Muay Thai epics. This is actually bits of Ong Bak and The Protector (Tom Yum Goong) combined featuring an Indonesian lookalike using a similiar Silat style. Oh, and the ending totally sucks so VIEWERS BEWARE. I can't believe I wasted money buying this and time watching it. Suit yourselves but this one just didn't do it for me. I'm looking forward to Ong Bak 3.

If you think THIS sucks, then why don't you just watch fight scenes on youtube, because you have no interest in anything else. "Merantau" kicks the ass of "Ong Bak" with it's thin storyline and it's crappy acting. i guess you go in for those cheap American action films from the 80's too?

I really have to agree. In the stunt department, Merantau might not have been as over-the-top and eye-popping as Ong Bak, which I do consider a modern classic, however Merantau is a better told story than any of Tony Jaa's movies. It's better directed and more coherent than Ong Bak's sequels and Tom Yum Goong.

It's a better film than many of Jet Li and Jackie Chan's movies. Remember, I'm not talking about fight scenes in this case, I'm talking about the way the story is told.

Merantau had, for a martial arts movie, fleshed out characters, good performances, and great pacing, as well as some things in it that broke cliches and molds.
It's fighting was certainly more realistic than Ong-Bak, again, the stunt sequences weren't as ambitious (but there are a few that are simply great), however much more of the fighting is believable and seems like it could actually happen.

For sure the Pentjak Silat/Silat Harimau presented in the movie looked much more effective and brutal than the acrobatic style of Tony Jaa.

For Stunts/Fun/Over-The-Top-Action: Ong Bak

For Better Drama/Storytelling/More Plausible Action: Merantau.

Both are good.

uhh....what!? Okay, no way. At least in most Hong Kong action flicks, they explain why the characters will all of a sudden start duking it out with martial arts. In THIS movie, it just so happens the two white guys are skilled kick boxers and chose not to shoot the main character with a god dang gun.

You people must be blind if you thought this movie was better than Ong Bak. It might be a so-called "classic" by Indonesian standards but sucks as a film overall.

Oh yeah Harimau Silat is sooo much like Muay Thai.

Anyone who thinks this is a good MA films has clearly not seen many, or any, of the classics. This movie was bad, plain and simple, pimped only by people who were involved in it (cougcoughToddBrownandTwitchcough) The fights have poor pacing, are clumsy edited and have intensity whatsoever. They are tedious and repetitive. Iko Uwais has zero screen presence, and the story? What story? The protagonist coincidentally runs into the same bad guys several times, then fights them. There you go, that's the whole story.

I've been watching MA films since Bruce Lee, Shaw Bros, 80s hard hit action, 90s wirefu,Pop star fu, artsy fartsy fu...

This is a good solid MA drama...NOt as flashy as the Thai films but then again i didn't have to fast forward to the fight scenes. Something about the actors made you want to watch it. I never seen this Silat form, seem a bit goofy looking but it works. I particularly like the elevator fight scene.

The only negative would be the white guys, i thought they made them a bit over the top...

Im looking forward to the Raid...

Considering how many bad reviews Ong Bak 2 and 3 got, the last thing i would use to describe all Tony Jaa's movies will be overrated. Merantau has about much story as the average TJ movie, the first Ong Bak had better fights, plain and simple. Merantau's fights lack better pacing and editing, they just go on and on with no sense of tension or excitement whatsoever. The Raid looks interesting so far, maybe they can actually pull it off properly in that one.

Ong Bak's story:

Tony Jaa goes to find buddah's head statue of his village, and find a member of his village. Runs into illegal fighs run by the people who stole the statue.

Merantau's story:

Iko Uwais goes to the big city, coincidentally runs into the same girl and bad guys several times.

Not much difference going on there. They both happen to rain into the bad guys, and the action starts from there.

Ong Bak was Jaa's first movie as a lead performer, they obviously wanted to showcase all the things he can do, thus all the scenes of him running over people, jumping over cars and so on. Merantau doesn't have a single fight that can be consider memorable in any way. We will just have to agree to disagree.

I'm still waiting for you to explain how Merantau's narrative is different, or how exactly Meranta has an actual story beyond "protagonist runs into bad guys". You just bashed Ong Bak, but didn't go into any detail about the story of Merantau, maybe because there is none?

Calling kung fu that uses wires, wire-fu, is now racist? Please explain how that can be racist or insulting?

Everyone is entitled to their opionion, but saying "Iko Uwais is a bargain basement Tony Jaa" is ridiculous. Iko Uwais is a BEAST!

I'm Gotham's reckoning.

Stop using the word 'sucks' it makes you sound like an ignorant american, of course you are but try to hide it a little. Silat is not Muay Thai, they are different fighting styles. The main protagonist dies, this isn't hollywood, The ending to every film does not have to be the same.

Considering that I'm a Gareth evans fan, I'll have to check out merantau
