I watched this documentary and the narrator sounds nothing like him, it sounds like an old man with a different accent.

It totally was him. Like others from the UK with strong accents he kinda toned his down or enunciated more, something especially needed when you are narrating a program.
shareNot to mention it was intended for an American audience that often has trouble understanding accents other than Received Pronunciation.
