Is this non true canon like that Obi Wan show will be?

Everyone knows that Boba Fett died in the Sarlacc Pit in the hit motion picture Return Of The Jedi.

But now I see they've made this series. Is it a prequel to ROTJ or is this a non canon retcon of the Lucas canon legacy?

If so - like the non canon "Tatooine Adventures of Obi-Wan Kenobi" series - I'll probably give this a miss...

Okay, a few notes on canon.

1. Pre-episode 1 canon: Consisted of episodes 4-6, the Bantam Spectra Novels, the 1990s video games, and the Dark Horse Comics.

2. Pre-bantam Spectra Novels canon: This consisted of episodes 4-6, the Marvel Comics, The Lando Trilogy of Books, The Han Solo Trilogy of books, Splinter Of the Minds eye, The two Ewok movies, and the Star wars Holiday Special!

3. Post-episodes 1-3 canon: Consisted of all of the aforementioned movies, books, and television shows.

4. George Lucas canon: Consisted of the special editions of episodes 4-6, episodes 1-3, and some of those really crappy 100% CGI movies/TV shows that came out in the early 2000s. Oh, and at some point he made some new even more specialer specialized editions of episodes 4-6, so they became the new George Luca$h canon.

5. Disney canon: Consists of some (unknown at this time) variation of episodes 4-6, episodes 1-3, the Book Of Boba Fett, The Mandalorian, Rogue One, Soylo, the crappy 100% CGI movies/TV series that came out in the early 2000s and crapisodes 7-9.

At one point or another all of these various strains were considered canon. So, go with whatever canon that you like because it's bound to change again at some point so there's no point in paying attention to what's "official" and what isn't.

I'm partial to choice number one. Although I did enjoy certain aspects of the Mandalorian series. Most notably when Luke Skywalker showed up.

Did you mean post Bantam Spectra for (2)? (Just that you mentioned them in (1))

Where do does the Heir to the Empire and the original Thrawn series fit in? These were the first Star Wars books I read and I think at one point just 4-6 and them would have been my canon...

I agree re "official" canon - it's a meaningless term really. Just works on some people as a marketing ploy.

The Thrawn series appears to non-canon but mined for material

I was never an EU fan, but there clearly was a sizable fanbase for all those novels to keep coming out (many in hardcover no less). It's uncharacteristically thoughtless for Disney to ignore all that.

It'd be like buying a brand new Lamborghini and stripping it down for parts.

The original Bantam Spectra EU books were all (for the most part) number one best sellers- even "The Crystal Star"- ugh! That's why it was so dumb of Disney to do what they initially did. They didn't have to make the books into films, but they should have borrowed from them while writing episodes 7-9. Instead they completely ignored them, and pissed off a large portion of the fan base in the process. While I have issues with some of the Mandalorian episodes, and the Book of Boba Fett has been kind of boring so far, they at least have the right idea as to how to borrow ideas from the novels, and make them their own.

I don't have your depth of knowledge about the EU books & media, but I absolutely agree it was dumb to alienate an established, fully monetized fanbase, especially where there was ABSOLUTELY NO DOWNSIDE

What I've read is Lucas productions kept strict control over all the IP. If you wrote for the EU, you had to pre-approve your plot to keep it consistent with all the other books, games, etc. AND you had to give up any rights to the characters you created.

Disney presumably purchased all those rights when they bought LucasFilms - controlling IP is the one thing Disney has truly mastered.

Argh, enough ... I'm getting myself upset over something that has absolutely nothing to do with me. It's just that, while I was never an EU fan, I can totally imagine what a slap in the face it'd be for all that lore to be tossed aside. And again, for no reason at all. They bought it ALL f'crissakes.

What, were they worried about finding a 60-year old Mara Jade for episode 7?

To be honest I only know about the first 10 or so books of the bantam Spectra era. That lasted from around 1991 to 1998. After that Bantam Spectra was no longer releasing Star wars books, and the prequel trilogy began. I hated episode one. I thought that it had good ideas (like all of the prequels) but George hadn't directed anything in over twenty years, and it was obvious. Had those movies had a good director and someone to clean up the scripts George wouldn't have had fanboys yelling at him for the past twenty years about how he rapped their childhood. I didn't do that- I just stopped paying attention to Star wars altogether. It wasn't until about ten years or so ago that I was able to go back and read some of the original EU books. I figured that I would just accept my own cannon. Which consisted of episodes 4-6, the original Bantam Spectra books up to 1999, The original Lando, and Han Solo trilogy's from the early 1980s, and "Splinter of the Minds Eye" by Allan Dean Foster. Those novels (while not all were good) are enough Star wars for my appetite.

You are correct about Lucas productions keeping tight control over the EU. From what i have heard there was an entire division that made sure that everything lined up, stayed in canon, and adhered to all of Georges rules.

When Disney announced that they dropping the EU altogether I had a feeling that it was going to be a disaster. I still knew the movies would make money. The Star wars name alone (at the time) was strong enough to break records, but i knew that once the hype of the new movie(s) wore off that people would be pissed off. Which is exactly what happened.

They should have either followed the outlines that Lucas gave them (they probably could have been made into good movies with the proper writer/director combo) or taken from the EU, and expanded upon it.

As for a 60 year old Mara Jade, well de-aging technology has been around for at least 15 years. It doesn't always look great, but this is Star Wars, and no one would have cared if they had de-aged Luke, Han, Lando and Lea. Disney made money, but they lost more money in the long run, and hurt the franchise. Arrogance, stupidity and greed are the culprits.

I'm still trying to figure out where the 250 million dollar budget that they had for episode 7 went. That movie in no way shape or form looked like it cost that much to make.

It's been many years since I read them but that Thrawn trilogy was a decent sequel trilogy.

Luke Skywalker was an actual character. The build up and threat from the Imperial remnants under Thrawn was reasonably described and the cloned evil sith guy was a decent villain as well.

Like you say, bizarre that they completely ignored it. Adapt sure but at least with a basis there, they'd have come up with a much better consistent trilogy.

I was hooked on the EU with Grand Admiral Thrawn after I played Tie Fighter and its other extended franchises back in the day as a kid. Just love that blue deviled eyed bastard.

reply

I just mentioned them in number 1. It's not a chronological order for the order of the canon or anything like that.

This show takes after ROTJ.

What legacy? He didn't give Boba backstory.

Who the hell is this Ashoka character? Did she ever appear in any of the movies or TV-shows?
