Is this a remake of Adventures in Babysitting?

That's what I'm trying to figure out.

Not a remake, a tactic. Take a plot from vague 80s comedies, make a few changes and sell.

See: "Due Date."

I think it's only a remake if the original creators are involved and get something out of it.

This is more of a "wait-until-the-copyright-expires-so-we-can-steal-the-plot-and-profit" sort of thing...

Anyway, it looks like it could be a fun way to spend a couple of hours, but it will never have the charm and retrofeel of AiB. Hell, it will never refer to Thor as a homo...

The trailers at my showing were for American Reunion, Darkest Hour, Three Stooges and Cabin In The Woods(which looks awesome BTW)

It was originally supposed to be a direct remake of Adventures in Babysitting, but they made a few changes to fit the actors and to update it somewhat.

reply

Yeah, it's a loose remake of Adventures in the same way that Due Date was a loose remake of Planes, Trains And Automobiles, I wonder if that film started out as a remake as well?

reply

Probably. Let's see how this affects the Oscars before passing real judgement. It may actually work.

I love Adventures in Babysitting.

I wish Hollywood would start embracing a little originality.
Plenty of scripts floating around out there and some of them have to be good.

At first one would say "The Sitter" is not a remake of "Adventures In Babysitting." However, it most definitely is. There are very similar situations with modification of course. Here are the only ones that I can think of at the moment:

The sitter and the kids are the only white people in a black bar. However, by the time they leave, they are seen as very cool and everybody digs them.

There is an incident with checks. Both movies mention that they are good checks and say something like "Just sign it over to yourself" and blah blah blah, and in both movies the people reject the checks.

Somebody hurts somebody else's foot. In AIB Brad gets stabbed, while in the sitter Garth, I believe his name is, gets shot in the foot and both people have to go to the hospital.

The kids who go on the adventure are two boys and one girl, and in both movies the girls are dressed up in a way. Also in both movies two kids are related while the other one isn't related to any of them, or at least not by blood.

The babysitter hooks up with somebody they meet that night.

The babysitter is dating somebody who is a total jerk.

The babysitter and kids get in the middle of some illegal stuff that is going on, in AIB it's people who steal cars and strip them to sell their parts while in the sitter it's drug dealers.

The kid who is not related to the other two steals something from the boss of the illegal operation which leads to all of them being chased.

The car they drive in gets destroyed though in AIB it gets fixed where in the sitter it does not.

The babysitter and kids go to the party where their parents are at, and they are not seen by their parents.

The babysitter does not want to babysit in the first place.

The babysitter takes the kids out because somebody needs their assistance.

Source? Or are you just pulling it out of your as*?

Didn't realize you could copyright a movie plot...

When Hugh Laurie goes for a colonoscopy there is a doctor in the House.

reply

I would describe this as a destruction of Adventures in Babysitting. It's as if they tried to remake it without understanding what made the first movie so good and instead delivered this dog. Horrible, horrible movie.

reply

Looks like it ripped it off, they should be sued if its not a remake.

reply

Yeah, this movie is basically a R rated version of Adventures in Babysitting without any of the heart or cleverness of the original.

reply

haven't seen it, but the trailer made me wonder if it was anything like "Uncle Buck" with Jonah Hill as a younger version of John Candy...

Adventures in Babysitting was a great movie. This is not. I lasted 20 min and had to turn it off. Sorry, but I don't find Jonah Hill funny, all he does it swear and act like a total loser. Was he high throughout this movie or were his eye red because he was crying when he realized what a crap script this was? The kids in this film were brutal. The little girl, what the hell was that all about. It was creepy.

This movie for me, ranks at a 1 only because I won't give a zero. Not funny, not original, not anything. I can't believe they make this kind of crap. I like JB Smoove but had to bale on this before he made an appearance. It was just too painful to watch.

You don't get to grade a movie if you don't finish it (let alone 25% of it).

"what the hell was that all about"

Hmm, let me see—try finishing it next time and you might actually find out. That's the thing about character arcs, it takes the duration of the story to see it unfold. Imagine that!

This movie pales in comparison to AiB. It lives up to this idiotic era where comedy has to be crude, racist, stupid, physical, violent, bathroom, sexist, drugs, alcohol, gays, crap crap crap.........
