Telling a Kid He is Gay...

When that young boy has barely reached puberty, is pretty awful, not to mention dangerous. The kid was clearly screwed up emotionally. Whether it's because he's truly gay or not, if he's that upset about it, and in denial, then forcing him to admit he's gay won't help. In fact, what Noah did in that scene was horribly damaging, and possibly dangerous and life-threatening to the well-being of that kid. Also, throwing his prescribed medication into the river is crazy. Noah is not a doctor, or a psychiatrist. It's not his call to decide to stop the kid from taking his meds. Secondly, forcing a kid to suddenly go off his meds completely, without titrating down, could cause more havoc. The kid clearly was either in denial, or genuinely denying that he's gay. So Noah either forced him to admit something he wasn't ready to deal with yet, or he forced the kid to perhaps believe something about himself that isn't true. Noah is not a therapist, and that scene potentially did way more psychological damage to the kid, rather than helping him in any way.

Noah didnt force him to stop anything, Rodrigo did when he tossed the meds off the bridge. And Id go as far as to say the therapist was doing more damage by prescribing slater with meds when it would be clear as day after talking to him about his feelings, what he was going through. Also 12 years old is a pretty old enough age to know what youre sexuality is. Kids may not act on it, but by the time youre 7-8 you would probably have had a crush on somebody, whether it be a boy or girl.

The point isn't whether or not the boy is gay.
The point is, can a babysitter who just met the kid have enough insight to make that call? And even if he did, would it not be over-stepping his boundaries?

I suspect you think it's ok because you like the advice he's giving.
But change the advice, say he told the kid, "Gays are evil", I have a feeling you would wonder, 'what business it is of his'.

SPOILER ALERT!!! Good guy wins/gets girl, a-hole gets kumuppins & I'm out $8 SPOILER ALERT!!

"The first step to fixing a problem, you have to admit you have a problem." He didn't force him to do anything. Who are you to judge...? Are you a doctor of any sort?

reply

12-13 years old is not old enough to make the choice to be gay. ;)

reply

But it's old enough to decide you're straight. Riiiight. I know of people being straight until they were 50. I know of people having gay relationships until they were 17 and then going straight and then having kids. People can go different ways. Sadly, being gay can be a death sentence(due to bullies/hate crimes) so I sort of agree with you a teeny bit. But I wish it wasn't the case. By admitting that being gay is a choice, you admit that all guys want to suck d but choose not to.

reply

But it's old enough to decide you're straight. Riiiight.

Yes, that is right. Because, as much as nobody wants to admit it, being gay is an alternative lifestyle. That means that, by definition, being gay is not the norm. It must be "discovered".

Naturally, a male and female, can mate and have offspring. That makes it 'Natural'. The 'Norm'. This cannot be achieved by humans of the same sex.
Therefore, whether by choice or born instinct, it would be apropos for one to assume one is straight until otherwise decided.

Do not be confused. I am, in no way, suggesting that being homosexual is wrong.
Just as, I would not say a deaf person is wrong for being deaf. I'm just saying, it's not 'standard'.

reply

I don't think you know the meaning to of Natural. Homosexuality exists in nature, in many species of animals; thus, making it Natural.

reply

Plus, Homosexuality is not a Lifestyle. Not in any Scientific or conceptual way.

Unless you can share with us some Scientific evidence that proves homosexuality is a lifestyle, maybe you should educate yourself before making wild and totally childish claims. A basic Biology or Sociology class can teach you the difference between lifestyle and sexual preference.

reply

It's not a choice.

When did you choose to be straight? Oh? You didn't? You just were?

reply

Of course you're born straight. They're called REPRODUCTIVE organs. It's our biological imperative to reproduce to pass on our genes.

reply

It sure is. I knew I was gay in 6th grade.
Sorry, but you're incorrect

reply

Didn't he just meet the kid that night? Or hardly know him? I didn't think that was the wisest thing to do! The kid was too young and not ready, and Noah wasn't the brightest guy.
The human mind is a complex thing. I don't believe people choose to be gay, straight, or anything in between. But they choose to act on it. Some people are strictly one way their whole life, some wander back and forth, some ride both rails. It depends on how they're wired. Hell would be being afraid, or not being able to act on these human desires.

reply

Thank you!
I'm sure a portion of society loves the idea of outing a kid, but realistically, that was incredibly irresponsible.
Noah literally knew him for just a few hours and basically told him 'all his problems were because he was really gay'. And what did he base that on? I guess if you watch gymnastics, and are nervous around girls... your gay?

as mypaperdue said "are you a doctor?" No. - Is Noah? - No.

The issue is not "is Slater gay", the issue is, was Noah informed and qualified to tell him he was.

If you believe it is conflicting to be gay and told you are straight, then you have to believe it is equally conflicting to be straight and told your gay.

From what we (Noah) saw, you could not possibly make that call.

Yeah. Noah had his plate full that night.
He couldn't possibly make that call while being so distracted after one night.

reply

I didnt see a problem with it. He knew, we all knew.
