How did you guys feel about the rape scene??

Okay, I know what that must sound like, but I didn't mean it like that. What I actually meant was that since the two actors are engaged in real life, it must have been pretty awefull to do that scene. Even if they are all professional and stuff. Really? I couldn't stop thinking about that while watching it. They were both pretty spectacular in the series though, I actually liked her a lot too, I think they were the two best things from the show. Much credit to them for pulling off that scene the way they did considering everything. But I really couldn't help but feel very unsettled not by what happened on screen but what was actually happening.

What did you guys think?

so they actually liked it

Honestly, this is about the most ignorant comment I have ever read on one of these message boards. Why would any two people, whether or not they were engaged, enjoy portraying rape? Rape is a vile and disgusting act. There is absolutely nothing sexy or erotic about it; on the contrary, I'm sure that scene was very difficult for the two of them to film, whether they were together at this point in time or not. I remember reading an interview where an actor had to do a rape scene and he said it was so troubling to him that he vowed never to do it again. I can't imagine how disturbing and troubling it would be to act out such a scene for either a man or woman.

It was very disturbing to me, and I think it was supposed to. Movies often show the real things in life in a polished, fake kind of way, because people are quite touchy nowadays. That's why I like British movies - they don't effin care if you get the creeps or not. In fact, they seek this effect!

And that's why I respect Tom Hardy so much - he isn't afraid to bare it all out there. If you've watched his other movies (Like Bronson or Stuart), you'd know what I'm talking about. One needs guts to get out there and portray the sheer ugliness of life. And kudos to Charlotte Riley, I liked her since I saw her in Wuthering Heights and I think she's a marvelous actress, very suiting to Tom. God, I hope these people make more movies!

They didn't show the rape scene when it was on here,so I can't really comment. All I saw was Freddie pulling her by the hair into the room and then Jimmy left a message on the answering machine.

Then I saw Freddie kissing Maggie's breasts and Maggie's crying and says "Jimmy's going to kill you."

So from what I SAW,there was no rape scene.

Which brings me to only ONE conclusion:Freddie and Maggie were having an affair, and Freddie loves rough sex.

She was crying at the end because she was ashamed. She had always made herself out to dislike Freddie.

And then she lied and said that he raped her so that she could be justified for killing him.

While in fact she was killing him just to keep the affair a secret.

Well, seems like they censored a lot of it. But it was in no way an affair. Maggie despised Freddie and, to the surprise of the public, she didn't love the kid she had from him either. She was just sorry she was a bad mother, as much as she was sorry and felt guilty she was a bad partner to Jimmy, because Freddie raped her.

SPOLERS AHEAD!

As for the full scene, they show Freddie thrusting in her and spitting on her face, saying "that's how you make a *beep* baby". Then she almost throws up, which isn't the usual behavior after an affair...

reply

Hm, I never thought about it that way. To me, despite how he was conceived, she did love the kid, and I thought she was just afraid of how he might turn up, you know, a psychopath like his real father. I think if she really didn't love him, she wouldn't have suffered as much as she did when he died. Which by the way, I think the actress was amazing in those scenes after little Jimmy died!

Well,I think that she DID kinda love him. What I don't understand is why Freddie was there.

Freddie would have been killed LONG before lil Jimmy was born!!!

And there were no amazing actors or actresses in this show.

Sure they were probably amazing in OTHER things, but all the acting in this show was horrible.

I blame the writers, with all the changes they made in this story they didn't seem to improve upon it at all.

In fact they probably made it worse!!!

I'm really surprised as to how it could've slipped by anyone that that was a rape. Even with a censored (tamer) version weren't Maggie's screams still heard? And then he spat in her face afterward. I mean...

Just to say it was a brutal rape scene....he spits in her face during and rape her really hard she cries/screams all the way through...then he hangs around till the phone call and basically threatens her marriage...Its was disgusting i bet Tom felt quite bad after.Even though it was acted its such a brutal thing even in acting.

reply

no freddie knew it wasn't consenual. he even told that black before he killed him that he raped maggie. i thought this rape scene was pretty tamed. not that i need it to be graphic or anything but i have seen ALOT worse.

reply

Well in the world they lived in,I'm surprised Freddie lived long enough to rape ANYBODY.There would have been a target on his back. The Turkish drug dealers would have been watching all his movements and all the people that he knew.

Surely they would have figured out that he had a thing for Maggie.A well placed sniper would have easily taken him out as he walked past a window in Maggie's apartment.

Maggie would have gotten out of the bath and found his dead body lying on the floor.

I still don't understand why he was able to shoot anybody at a DRUG deal!!!

I actually recently say it on Youtube, and it was more comedic than terrible. When Freddie carries Maggie up the stairs she's screaming because she thought Freddie was going to hurt her. But then we see Freddie have sex with her and she's just lying there. I think that when she realized he wasn't going to hurt her she just LET him have sex with her. After all, it DID get her a baby. Also it's said that Maggie was in love with Freddie so this way she's off the hook. But the way Freddie talked in this scene was kinda funny.

I absolutely agree with you. There are so many scenes of cruelty and violence in movies, and sometimes even if it's appropriate in the script, it's done in an uncreative and very clumsy way. At https://gradesfixer.com/free-essay-examples/rape/ I read several essays about rape, about this problem, and about the depiction of these horrific scenes in world art.
