Isabella's husband

Did anyone else find John Knightley (George's brother) completely hilarious?!!

reply

Yes. He was great, wasn't he? A lovely mix of wit and irascibility.

That's what so good about Sandy Welch - her excellent understanding and writing of characters, even the minor ones.

Oh yes. Loved the character in the book too, very much like my own husband with his domestic tates and love for anything to do with his family. Lovely characterisation in this adaptation.

He looks like what happens when you punch a cow!

Yes, I liked this character too! It was very well acted, I think.

There is no charm equal to tenderness of heart.

His character was amazing and hilarious!!! I loved how he was like an older brother to Emma and how he knew that Elton liked her and all the looks he gave her at the Weston's Christmas party. He was so hilarious!!!

Today it's all giant bugs. Giant spiders, giant grasshoppers... Who will believe such nonsense?

He benefitted from being more fleshed out than previous adaptations. To their credit.

He was great!

I loved John Knightley. Not only when he was trying to tell Emma about Elton but also when Mrs. Churchill died.

"_Churchill has died"

John: "Why should we care?"

I fell out laughing. He was so blunt and unassuming.

"What happens to a dream deferred?"

I felt bad for the character at the dinner party when he appeared to sort of maneuver Emma and Elton into the same carriage. It's not really fair, since in the novel it's clearly stated that it was an accident on John's part, that he was so hasty in getting his wife home that he neglected to join Emma and Elton.

I'm just re-watching it now after finishing the novel for the first time, and except for this really tiny detail, I loved him in this series. His character is such a great mix of good nature and stubbornness to be perfect humorous aside.

I find him completely annoying.

I like John Knightley in this version. He is hilarious and very insighful. I don't recall him being all that insightful in the novel. However, movie John tells Emma as much in the carriage ride over to Elton's. He says something along the lines of "I have a knack for knowing this things," or something to that effect. John's actual lines at that point in the series leads me to believe that later on George may have confided in John about his feelings for Emma. I know Isabella and John are shocked to hear about Emma and George in the novel, but the John in this adaptation just seems to be a little more aware and not that surprised upon hearing the news.

"Perhaps after all it is possible to read too many novels."

In the book, John does warn Emma that her manner towards Mr Elton is leading him to think she likes him. Emma, predicatably, takes no notice. He is also unsurprised at the news that George is engaged. John is clearly a very bright man, which is good because it offsets Isabella's occasional sillyness!

John isn't surprised to hear George is engaged, but he is surprised that Emma is the lucky woman (from George's behaviour in London, he guessed that his brother was in love, but he didn't know whom with).

"I wish you to know that you have been the last dream of my soul."

reply

Yeah! John Knightley was great!!!! *Loved him*

Yes, that's me...Little miss Lee...

Yes. However, I also thought Guy Henry was funny in the Beckinsdale version. I liked his sarcasm as Mr Elton arrives to get into the carriage OTW to the Christmas party.

My favorite character, and a very attractive actor. I hope to see more of him!
