Favourite moments/quotes

Hey all,

Just finished watching the final episode and LOVED it, and just interested in what all your favourite scenes or quotes are from any of the episodes so we can re-live the good times :)

Me too! I liked it when Frank lay on her lap at the picnic last night actually, and there were lots of other sweet moments between frank and emma in the other episodes too (even though things weren't quite as they they seemed on his part) he has very smiley eyes!

I haven't read the book or seen any other adaptions so I didn't know what was coming which probably helped me get caught up in it all!

I love pretty much any scene with Knightley:

- "that man is so full of himself, I'm surprised he can stay on his horse"
- when he screws up his face and fists in frustration with Emma during their
fight in first Ep.
- when they make up while holding their baby neice
- "a hair cut. Well thats very important business indeed."
- Knightley and Emma's spat about gentlemen and carriages lol (just watched the
first two eps last night)
- when knightley and Emma are dancing!!!! And when he asks her to dance aww.

haha also, when i watched the second ep with my friend last night, we always cracked up whenever we saw her dad worry or say anything about health (like the cake), but it was most hilarious when at the christmas party, Elton tells Emma that she is not to go to visit Harriet while she is sick because Emma's health is "paramount" and then it cuts to Michael Gambons face who has the most hilarious expression lol. well done.

I like the way Knightley says "hmm... yes... now" after he suggests they go and tell Emma's father, and she says "what? now?"

It had a sexy kind of passionate urgency.

Yes, I loved that, too.

I loved that whole proposal scene, and the one after. And after Emma bursts in and says they can never marry, I love the way he puts the book down quickly on the table and runs after her.

"...unless you want to lose your man to a mentally ill ginger-pygmy with eyes like a bush-baby."

reply

Totally agree with both those posts!!

I loved how he was so confident and just couldnt wait to tell/ask her father but not in a crazy excited way, just cool, calm, collected and confident of his decision. Love it.

And when she burst in crying, just how she said "You know I love you! I always will! But we cant get married! THATS ALL!!!" It cracks me up everytime i think of it lol. so hilarious.

Plus when he holds her hand when they tell her Dad!!

And just the whole proposal scene. It was just so KNIGHTLEY because he wasnt all emotional or anything, but he was as he was, which was just simple and perfect. Loved it. and then when she almost cries when she puts her hands on his face...

Onto a different couple - I loved Harriet and Robert Martin - their wedding and the first interaction as well. They seemed pretty well cast for each other (I cant believe he still wanted to marry her after all that!)

I also liked it when Knightley announces that he's going to leave for London, and he takes Emma's hand, seems like he's about to kiss it, but rethinks it, and just holds it for a long pause. I appreciate all of JLM's subtle awkward gestures because it really showed how Mr. Knightley was truly straining to repress he feelings.

- "that man is so full of himself, I'm surprised he can stay on his horse"
AGREED!!! Oh my goodness, I laughed and laughed and laughed and laughed at that line. Hysterical. And the delivery of it was absolutely perfect.

Yes, I did love when he asked (or was invited to ask) her to dance. Great scene.

Ooh... I was just rewatching it and a new favorite moment appeared. Towards the end, when Isabella is reading the letter announcing Frank and Jane's engagement, and Mr. Knightley is holding a baby, even the baby stops cooing and seems startled by the news.

Hahaha. That baby is adorable and a brilliant thespian.

reply

One little moment I thought was fantastic, was Emma with Frank's head in her lap, laughing at his comment about wanting a wife with eyes the same shade as hers, and she happens to glance over at Mr. Knightley. He looks disapproving (and jealous), and her smile immediately fades; she's already feeling ashamed of her behaviour and anxious for his approval.

"I wish you to know that you have been the last dream of my soul."

reply

ALSO loved Romola's acting when she said to Knightley...

"[After speaking with Harriet] I began to examine my own heart, and there you were. Never i fear, to be removed".

I LOVED that. It was so simple and sweet and not over done at all.

The way Emma matured over the 4 eps was incredibly well acted. And how sweet was Emma and her fathers moment before she went on her honeymoon?!

YES. The way Romola delivered that line was just breathtaking - so genuine and so sweet.

All the romance between the two was very well acted, though. They were both fantastic.

reply

I really enjoyed this miniseries adaptation and was pleasantly surprised. The cast was absolute superb in this one, and Romola Garai and Jonny Lee Miller really shone in all four episodes.

I have so many favorite moments, but to just name a few...

Episode 3
-The part where Emma admits to Mr. Knightley how she never wanted to travel, and how people may find it odd. This scene definitely shows Emma's vulnerability, and the great friendship between her and Mr. Knightley. I also love how she brightens up after he tells her about taking on a project, and his rather humorous nod after she says, "We will only invite people we like!"
-all three dances at the ball, particularly the last dance between Knightley and Emma

Episode 4
-right before the proposal scene, when Emma's trying to hide from Knightley and he spots her, and she asks if he's angry with her...JLM's face is hilarious with a "what..." expression at her question
-It's a small moment, but I really liked the part where Frank Churchill, at the very end, asks Emma if she expected their story to turn out this way. It kind of ties together the idea from Episode 1 how Emma, Frank, and Jane are connected in some odd way (as Emma had expressed to Harriet)
-and of course, the proposal scene

I must do something or I will die before I've lived. Do you ever feel that?

reply

Great points, people. Thanks for sharing the quotes that I'd forgotten. I agree with them all except for when Emma says she found Knightley in her heart - that made me cringe terribly!

I like books more! http://www.goodreads.com/user/show/2021251

reply

Normally I would cringe. But I thought she just did it in a really good way. She wasnt being dramatic or whatever, just really simple and sweet. So it was cute.

I agree with the person who brought up the scene when Emma feels insecure about not having travelled anywhere. Knightley was very cute in that scene.

Also, he was sweet when he walked in and was going to tell everyone about Elton getting married but he saw Harriet and stopped himself (but then Miss Bates walked in and told everyone anyway) but I thought that was nice of him...

And I love how at the beginning of the proposal when she says she'll listen to him as a friend, hes like "I dont want...." very cute... :D

I loved the dance and the proposal scene. Shame they didn't show the wedding though. Maybe the BBC were saving money!

My favourite bit is in the proposal scene, the two big sighs Mr Knightley gives whilst waiting for Emma's decision. They are full of his pent up emotions, anxiety, hope, distress, fear etc. This all culminates in him closing his eyes when Emma touches his face and he realises that everything is going to be ok. Brilliant.

reply

My favourite moment is when they are sitting on the bench talking after the proposal.

Mr. Knightley says, "I saw my life here in a diffferent light ... exposed to others ... and ... ah ... defenseless if they chose to plunder it." Then Emma nestles on his shoulder with a short "Mmh" and Mr. Knightley cradles her ever so quickly.

Sooooo sweet ...

*sigh* and *thud*

reply

I just finished watching the three part presentation of Emma on PBS (USA). I didn't see that parts other people are mentioning about them talking after the proposal. The version I saw showed her saying she didn't know what to say, then putting her hands on his face and them kissing. The next scene is of her running to his house to declare she can't marry him.

Did PBS cut something or were some of you talking about the Emma with Gwenyth Paltrow? I sure hope I didn't miss part of the original miniseries. I really liked this version for so many reasons.

Thanks.

reply

Yes, film127 The PBS one was cut. You can catch the wonderful scene on youtube. Worth watching!

Hi film, I made a new post with the link to that scene. Very maddening that it was kept out of ours.

Indeed. A perfect climax!

"...unless you want to lose your man to a mentally ill ginger-pygmy with eyes like a bush-baby."

reply

Really? I totally didnt see it that way when i saw him close his eyes. He looked SCARED to me, not so much contented. But his vulnerability was still cute I thought, especially since in all the following scenes he gets more and more confident:

"Lets go tell him.......... mmm, yes, now." (as mentioned by a previous poster)

I go for the dance scene. It's just so telling, revealing how much Knightley loves Emma. Great chemistry between them. And the dance itself is beautiful.

reply

I agree!! I think it might be my favorite dance in an Austen film ever. I liked the way they hold each other while twirling... So lovely!

reply

I agree totally. My favourite Austen dance sequence. Knightly says later he knew for sure he loved her after "Boxhill". But I think it was more likely after the dance!

Cats rule, dogs drool!

reply

OR maybe it was us who already knew that he is in love, after the dance, but not yet him... :)

reply

Surely he must have though because he gets the flashback of her dancing. Plus when he says to her about looking at home at Donwell.

Oooo totally thought of another awesome moment - when Mrs E is trying to take over invitations and Knightley stands his ground (but not in a rude way)

"No thankyou, the only woman who will ever decide who will or wont come here is Mrs Knightley [everyone is in shock as they all though he would remain a bachelor] and until she is in being, I will do it myself"

(paraphrasing obviously)

That was an AWESOME moment because you know hes thinking about a/the Future Mrs Knightley :D

Also it was sweet that the day after the dance, Emma was just absentmindedly tinkering the song they danced to on the piano :) How could she not know then!! :)

I watched the final episode again last night.

I think the scene after Box Hill where Knightley tells Emma he's going to London is my favourite. The acting in this scene especially from Romola, is some of the best in any period adaptation ever. Every ounce of strain on this crisis point in their relationship shows in both their faces.

reply

Honestly I loved a lot of this adaptation, hardly a weak link in the entire series.

One of my favourite parts is after Emma has been contemplating in her mind whether she loves Frank or not, and she keeps saying "Is this how it is meant to be?" etc. And then later when she is dancing with Mr Knightley there is a close-up of her face, and she smiles, and all I could think of was "No, THIS is what love feels like!"

Jonny Lee Miller was amazing as Mr Knightley. I put my hands up and confess that I was the first to say I wasn't sure of his casting, felt that he wouldn't be right for the role at all (even though I really like him and have done for years) But after seeing it I feel that he was absolutely perfect. Every glance, every look completely expressed his emotions, his anguish and jealousy, his hope and happiness. Loved him.

reply

Also it was sweet that the day after the dance, Emma was just absentmindedly tinkering the song they danced to on the piano

It wasn't their dance, was it? It sounded more like the melody played by the flute in the previous dance, the Ship's Cook. Bit of an odd choice, I thought, but maybe she's thinking of how Mr Knightley saved Harriet?

"I wish you to know that you have been the last dream of my soul."

reply

Maybe 'everything is ok' was a bit lame on my part. What I should have said was the pleasure and assurance which the touch of her hands gave him was a moment for him to savour, he wasn't expecting that level of response from her. It is the start of his 'perfect happiness'.

Does this make you think differently? The scared bit has already happened.

reply

I agree with, well, all posters on fave moments and quotes! There are just so many!

Atm the ones that come to mind are:

- At Harriet and Robert's wedding when Mr Elton has to deliver the line "for richer, for poorer", Blake Ritson's face says it all.
- When Mr Knightley enters the room Emma, Harriet and Mrs Weston are in to give Emma 'good news' he then sees Harriet and chooses not to give the news, instead telling Emma how lovely it is that she took time out to visit Jane! Superb acting from JLM here. Following that Miss Bates enters the room and delivers the news Mr Knightley tried to cover up. Miss Bates not knowing how Harriet felt about Mr Elton thinks what an 'emotional girl' Harriet is for being to pleased for him. And her talking about the Elton marriage and pork in the same paragraph haha. After Emma tries so hard to focus the conversation on pork!
- Mr Knightley admiring Emma at the piano and then his mood changes when Frank starts to sing with her
- The Cole's invitation scene "a haircut! imperitive business indeed!" (sorry can't remember the proper quote)
- Emma and Mr Knightley arguing near the end of episode 1 "you will bitterly regret your meddling"
- The baby Emma scene in which Emma and Mr Knightley make up
- Emma venting her frustrations after her first meeting with the new Mrs Elton. Annoyed by how she calls her neighbour 'Knightley'!
- The entire ball scene! A specific quote i like is when Emma and Mr Knightley laugh about how Mr Elton has been made smaller by his wife.

More to come as i'm re-watching all the episodes!
