Knightley vs. Darcy

Knightley 2009 vs Darcy 1995...

GO!

Knightly :D

Knightley a million times more than Darcy - who can ever know what Darcy wants or thinks? "I prefer an open temperament"!

reply

Now if it were Knightly vs. Darcy 05, I would have to pause. But I think Knightly would win for the same reason sighted above. Open temper indeed!!!!!

reply

Ok, Me too... Knightley over Darcy.

But... there is that twinkle in Darcy's eye when Elizabeth rescues his sister when she "forgets to turn the page" in her music.

But... there's those little breathes Kinghtley takes when he's waiting for Emma to speak...

Hmmm....

Yeah, Knightley. I feel like he is someone I could actually have a conversation with over dinner and not feel completely uncomfortable about which fork to use.

reply

No contest at all - Knightley wins hands down. While I liked CF as Darcy, he did absolutely nothing for me.

But even comparing the book characters, I would choose Knightley a million times over.

reply

Agreed. For much of the book, Darcy isn't a very nice guy. But Knightley's name fits him perfectly from the get-go.

Ooh... This is a difficult one. Very difficult.
I think I prefer the character of Mr Darcy. Much as he is proud and sometimes disagreeable, I recently read the book again looking at it from his point of view, and so many of his mistakes are justified by his feelings for Lizzie.
Mr Knightley is lovely, and he really knows Emma, but he can be a bit pompous and bossy, and he's not as romantic or dashing.

However... Colin Firth vs Jonny Lee Miller.... And specifically Colin Firth's Mr Darcy vs Jonny Lee Miller's Mr Knightley... Oh don't make me choose!

reply

Mr. Knightly No questions.

charming, thoughtful, and what I liked is that he waited for the right time to talk with Emma about his feelings.
Darcy didn't even know what Elizabeth thought of him. He spent no time with her in regards to learning about her and then he proposes!

I think he felt she would just fall down at his knees in gratitude! Arrogant! (do still love him though he isn't my first choice.)

Henry Tilney is pretty darn agreeable too!

It’s good to dream

Both are lovely guys
Both are played by good looking actors (I do find Colin Firth to be the most attractive male alive, but JLM is also way above average)
Both are intelligent
Both are kind
Both are action, not just words.
I could probably ramble on even more, but both are worthy of the title of a romantic hero. But in the end, I prefer mr Knighley. He is, all the way through and to everyone, the ultimate mr Nice Guy and very humble without being insecure. Plus, this does not make him a doormat and he isn't afraid to point when someone's being at fault; thus making it possible for that person to view their actions as other see them or something. if that makes sense. anyway. Just the small things such as asking Harriet to dance, bringing ms Bates apples.. or his looks at Emma's and the whole "the fire is too hot for me tonight"-scene.

100% Knightley!! i don't even have to think twice!! Knightley all the way. I have tried to watch the 95 version of P&P but i can't watch it all, i get bored. And i don't get why everyone loves Firth as Darcy. I think i might not like him as much because I have seen Firth in many other movies before I saw him in P&P, so i think of him not as a Darcy character!
but still definitely Knightley!!! he is funny and charming and so nice to everyone(almost everyone!! he does get a little jealous!)

All I care about is: are you happy with your haircut?

reply

I'd definitely have to go with Mr. Knightley! What a great all around guy. I'm in love with him... I just recently saw the 95 Pride and Prejudice and like it but the 2005 version was much better to me. Emma 2009 seems to be the best Austen movie I've seen so far.

reply

I am just picking up this thread after a long absence, but have you tried watching the 2005 film? McFadyen was not everyone's favorite Darcy, but I thought he was more appealing than Firth. The mini IS long and, although having more time to develop peripheral characters, the film stands its ground against this iconic adaptation. Having said all that, I agrree that Emna 09 is the best adaptation of Austen to date.

reply

I love the '95 adaption and Colin Firths take on Mr Darcy (my mum has loved it since the begining and brought me up on it. Also I can't stand the 2005 adaption, there is just so much wrong with it in my opinion so that Mr Darcy wouldn't even get a look in with my choice). And while I love Mr Darcy when you get to see him confortable in his own, natural, surroundings, he's just not my cup of tea I love the character and actor and he is far more a romantic hero then Knightley, but I couldn't really imagine being his friend which I think is important. If you asked me to choose between Mr Bingley and Mr Knightley I would have a problem.

So I also go with Mr Knightley

What?? Seriously, Bingley? Yes, he's sweet, but too easily led, IMO. I could not put up with such 'feebleness of character and timidity of purpose'.

I'd take Darcy over Bingley any day (and considering I'd take Knightley over Darcy any day, you can imagine how poor Mr Bingley doesn't stand a chance in the comparison you've drawn ;-)).

reply

To each his own, but I say also that comparing either Knightly or Darcy to Bingley is like comparing apples and oranges. No competition.

I wouldn't have a problem - I much preferred Mr Bingley's romance with Jane in the book (and in the 2005 film, which is my favourite)!

You like Bingley/Jane more than Knightley/Emma?

Not more than Mr Knightley and Emma, no! I just prefer them to Mr Darcy and Lizzy in Pride and Prejudice.

I would rate Mr Knightley and Emma, and then Colonel Brandon and Marianne in Sense and Sensibility, over Darcy, I think.

Knightley. Darcy was mean and stuck up even though he ended up being a nice guy in the end, lol.

reply

Jonny Lee Miller's Knightley definitely! Colin Firth's Darcy was far too smarmy.

Although, I must say that I love his portrayal of Edmund Bertram (I'm just going to ignore the creepy in-love-with-his-cousin plot to that story...)

Heh... well if you ignore the cousin thing, it's a pretty cute best-friends-one-friend-falls-for-good-looking-red-herring-at-first-before-finally-realising-love-for-other-friend kind of story.

I will forever admire Darcy...but something about Knightley's character in this one seems more...friendly and real.
