A sequel is coming, according to reports

It appears a sequel might be on the way.

Personally I was disappointed with the film. It just felt too generic and too joyless to deliver the kind of enjoyment that other adventure films like Indiana Jones and National Treasure do. I guess I'd give it about a 6/10.

But if they do a sequel, maybe they can get it right this time.

good to know

I did find the film a little generic, but it seems to be pretty much all Hollywood churns out these days. I probably wouldn't watch it in the theatre, in fact I know I won't, but that's not to say that I wouldn't watch it.

If a sequel does in fact come, I'm sure I'll go see it. I have a soft spot for adventure films and anything that is even remotely in the vein of Indiana Jones is going to get my money.

I do hope they make a better effort on this one though. These kinds of movies are supposed to be FUN but, not only was Vikander's Tomb Raider rather generic, but it also just took itself too seriously. It needed to loosen up a little.

Angelina Jolie's movie was not a great film, but it had more character and was not without its charms. I find that one to be a more enjoyable film to watch.

I think one problem was that Vikander did not play Lara with that excitement in her eyes that we saw in the 2013 video game version. Hard to believe video game cutscenes made of polygons gave us a better Lara, where we can really feel her joy of discovery and love of artifacts and archeology. Vikander's Lara felt like a regular civilian who did some martial arts and archery as a teen, and that's about it.

True, the movie Lara had a lot to worry about, when you think about what she was up against. Hostile forces terrorizing an island, being in the middle of nowhere, finding a father who abandoned her. I'm not expecting her to be all smiles, but the portrayal we got was a little too straightforward, and yes, too serious.

I can't say I've played a Tomb Raider game any time recently--I think that last time was circa 1998--but I will agree that this Lara did not seem especially joyful about the process of discovery, or joyful about much of anything for that matter. I lay blame for this as much at the feet of the writers and director as I do at the feet of Vikander, though. Hopefully the next time around the story will be more geared toward the adventuring and discovery elements.

yay!! can't wait. the first Tomb Raider movie is based on the Tomb Raider 2013 video game. I wonder if the sequel will be based on Rise of the Tomb Raider.

I just hope it's better than the first film.

I want another movie. This sounds good so far.

Ben Wheatley, huh? Well that's interesting.

I saw Kill List and Free Fire and have mixed feelings on both. I think he probably has the directorial chops to pull it off, but things are going to have to be right on the writing side.

I think for this film success or failure will come down to the script.

How? Not counting marketing this movie barley made double its budget

It made about 3x its budget worldwide:

My guess is that it probably about broke even theatrically, and then got into the profit zone through rentals, sales and TV rights. It obviously did well enough for the studio for greenlight a second film.
