Pretty Good

Took everything from the 2013 reboot and condensed/changed elements of it and was overall faithful to the source material. It was rather unoriginal and a bit cliche but these things are to be expected.

I can say that I think this was a decent video game adaptation. I do wish it was R rated and perhaps 10-20 minutes longer though. Could have added a lot more to the film and characters.

reply

If anything it needed to be shorter.

reply

What makes you think that? What didn't you like about it?

reply

I would cut out all the flash back scenes with Lara and her dad. I know its based on the game but the bow and arrow thing was quite cheesy, especially when we see her aiming the bow at the pilot at the end. And the big reveal at the end that Croft Holdings was the evil empire all along didn't make any sense.

reply

In other words it's worth waiting for on Netflix but not cinema worthy.

reply

I wished to explore the island more then she did,not go straight to himiko's tomb.

reply

Exactly why it would have been better as an R. Could have been longer, showed her surviving more, showed more blood and so on.

reply

Like in A SURVIVOR IS BORN.

And nekkid boobies

reply

Just watch Ex Machina for those.

I thought it was okay.

I liked the opening introduction to Lara in the MMA gym and the fox hunt. I thought all of that was done well. And I think that Vikander has charisma and brings to life an interesting version of Lara Croft, and it's obvious that despite everyone's concerns about her being "a 115 lb woman with no muscle" that she spent a lot of time getting in shape for the role.

The whole thing about the legend of Himiko was also interesting enough as the thing that propels the plot forward and there were some pretty decent action sequences throughout the film.

However, with all that said, I thought the whole thing felt a bit generic. It was almost like someone punched some parameters into an automated script writing program and this is what it spit out. I can just see someone checking the boxes for "Adventure," "Puzzles," "Ancient Relics" and "Action heroine" and then clicked GENERATE and this is what it came up with. It never really got me all that excited or invested in the characters or the plot, and I kind of felt like it was all rather joyless.

While watching it I couldn't help but compare it to the first Angelina Jolie film. At the end of the day, I don't think either movie is great. But given the choice, I would go with the Angelina film because her Lara Croft is the more likable of the two and overall I think that movie is just a more fun and enjoyable experience.

I don't want to sound like I'm too negative on this one. It's not that I outright disliked it; it's more that I just thought it was merely okay and was hoping for more. If they make a sequel I'll certainly go check it out.

Overall, I'd probably give this one a 6/10.

reply

Agreed, the hollywood version of A SURVIVOR IS BORN is good, but the game beats it

7/10 for me

reply

Yeah, some story elements were certainly cliched, but overall it was a good movie.

reply

I give this a solid pass. Parts of it were actually pretty fantastic. The whole boat scene where they marooned on the island looked amazing. Pretty stock movie that borrowed a lot from a dozen better movies and played a little too strongly too its video game heritage.

reply

Just saw it yesterday, and yes indeed, it was pretty good. I enjoyed it. Nice visuals, a decent story, good characters, and it felt like Tomb Raider 2013 and Rise of the Tomb Raider, which are both fantastic.

reply

I agree, was a solid action movie.
