Is this based on the Sinclair Lewis novel?

Because honestly, judging by the synopsis, it's the exact same plot.

-New resident in a small town
-Has ideas about reforming said town
-Every resident has a different issue

Not to mention it has the same name, but the plot is nearly identical (from what I've heard). Good job Horton Foote, plagiarizing a story without giving credit. If Sinclair Lewis were alive I'm pretty sure he'd be having a fit.

I don't think the movie is based on the novel. Despite small similarities, I've read the novel and it sounds nothing like the movie.

Horton Foote is noted for turning novels into plays (screenplays). Not plagiarism.
He adapted To Kill a Mockingbird and there is no sneaking that title by anyone.?
