Ellen Burstyn saves it

I just finished watching this on PBS as part of their Saturday night movie lineup, and expected it to be waaaaaaay better. It's not necessarily a bad movie just not a very good one, and if not for Ellen Burstyn I think it would've really sucked. Her character is the most well developed and interesting. Colin Firth was ok, and Amber Tamblyn did her best, but Orlando Bloom just looks like a serial killer the whole time, and Patricia Clarkson barely emotes... And both of them are usually good so that was a surprise. Margo Martindale who's actually a really good actress only has like one scene. It would've been nice to see her more. The whole story is just really disjointed and there's no real drama. After the climax it's like really? um, ok...

"spoilers" I kept thinking there was going to be some great lesson in the danger of hazardous waste, and that Firth would have some kind of comeuppance, or that something good would happen to allow Burstyn to keep her house. That was actually kind of a sad ending, that she's making the best of the fact that she has to sell it, even though it's been her home her entire life. And the one scene that I found really annoying was when Tamblyn and Bloom are driving, and she's asking him these 'get to know you' questions, like how old were you when your father died, were you named for him, etc. yet they've both always loved each other since they were kids? Wouldn't she have known the answers to these mundane questions already? Anyhow it's worth watching if you like any of the actors in it, but it was a bit of a letdown considering the cast, writer, and director...

My interest in this film began and ended with Ellen Burstyn, and while this is one of her weaker roles, she makes it worthwhile nonetheless. Very strong cast tries to make the most of a very strange script.
