I wanna See Celebrities With...

A more DIVERSE backround. I mean, c'mon for the most part these performers are Americans and you mean to tell me none of the white celebrities have blacks in their ancestry and vice versa with the Black celebs?

Course I havent seen all the episodes but it seems really boring when the lineage is so one sided.

The promo shows Blair Underwood, shocked, saying "My g-g-grandfather had slaves?????"

reply

Most American blacks have ancestors who owned slaves.

I think the implication is that the slave owner he uncovers is a black man who owns slaves.

reply

Oh yeah, okay. That happened too.

It did but most people don't know that. We are given the sanitized black and white version in school.

Rashida's episode should be pretty interesting

On another genealogy show on PBS, 'Finding your roots' (the second season just started) Mayor Cory Booker of Newark NJ uncovered a mixed background, although it was visually obvious.

I want you to pull my hair, and ravish me, and leave me for dead.

I thought it was visually obvious too. So, I was surprised that he acted so surprised to find out.

reply

I don't think he was surprised to find out he had a white ancestor. What's shocking is actually to identify these ancestors, who have names and histories we can know.

It's really an amazing thing whenever you uncover ancestors of any kind. I still get excited when I find one I didn't know about and I've been doing this for a long time!

might be what paula deen uncovers in her history tomorrow night

There have been at least three episodes where an Afro-American's ancestry has been traced back to a white slave owner. Now I want to see an episode where a Euro-American's ancestry is traced back to a black slave.

^YES. This is what I really want to see. Have they had Heather Locklear on yet?

I want to see some White celebrities discover their black ancestry. All races come from Africa. Therefore it makes no sense that whites would only have non-black ancestry. I mean, come on!

reply

Don't hold your breath. The dominant society has so effectively stigmatized black African ancestry that I don't believe that anyone who has lived a white life would be willing to come forward. That's despite the BS claims that "racism" is over and discrimination has ended. There is an excellent book entitled "Who is Black?: One Nations Definition". According to the author, admitting or being outed as having black African ancestry is equivalent to SOCIAL DEATH. That being true, don't wait for a rush of volunteers until another 500 years pass.

Lionel Richie and Emitt Smith have slave-owner ancenstry. And ironically enough, I think both of the slaves who birthed mulato children from their owners were both named Moriah/Mariah. And Lionel Richie has the hairline of that slave-owner.

Then- a place in time.
Than- preference between one or the other.

I know this is an old thread but if we're talking about wishing the show had shown more diversity, there is far greater diversity than whether someone has black slave ancestors or European white ancestry. Why not celebs with more diverse heritages (whole or biracial) like (just examples) Lou Diamond Phillips (Filipino), Lucy Liu (Chinese), Keanu Reeves (Polynesian, Chinese, Portuguese), Raquel Welch (Bolivian), or Dwayne Johnson (Samoan). Too bad they never profiled Steve Jobs, his parents were Syrian and Swiss-American.
