doesn't make sense

I'm on Season 2 Episode 2. I do not understand why they are drilling a hole in the mountain to drop down a chain. They are taking a chance of caving in the whole tunnel. Why don't they just bring the chain in through the entrance to the cave? They said that they are going to chain up the box and drag it out through the entrance, if they can do that, then why can't they bring the chain in through that way. Also, won't the chain just break the box? It's only tied together with some very old rope. They should find a way to vacuum pack the whole box to keep it intact, then drag it out.

Agreed, the way he explained it I don't even understand what the chain from above is supposed to do?
What's it for if they're planning on dragging it out?

Anyway it's very cool and a bit of a surprise that those logs dated back to the early 1500s

Even though they kind of ham up the production a bit, I'm very interested in that box now.

There plan is for the son, can't think of his name, to scuba dive in, attach the chain around what they are calling a box (the logs attached together in the shape of a box), then they will use heavy equipment to drag the box out through the underwater entrance (which is now caved in so they'll have to clear that out).

Watched the rest of the episode. They didn't explain what they're doing very well.
But it appears the hole from above is just to get the heavy chains into the cave.

reply

Yes, I don't see the point in drilling the hole. If they drill 1, then drill 5 and make a huge hole.
They kept saying the cost of the rig per day was expensive.

what about a damn water pump?

What about digging one side down so the water can naturally flow out?

Dragging the box out with chains, hell no...

The format of milking this out for tv purposes is the hardest part.

WHY KEEP WATCHING IT THEN

Boredom

I find it hard to believe there isn't something else better to watch
