Is it just me or does it seem like the producers really wanted Jack Black for the lead and just settled for "Jack Blackish" which is essentially "cocky unkempt fat guy with audacious yet non-threatening mannerisms." Also the three kids could have been stand ins for the cast of Malcolm in the Middle. This show has "short-run" written all over it.

He may be cut from similar cloth as Jack Black, but he is just being himself, give him more time.
IMO He is a very funny individual.
Well Justin Berfield who played Reese is an executive producer for Sons of Tucson.
So there's going to be similarities between the two.
Jack Black has more explosive mannerisms, I thought, while Labine is kind of the quintessential slacker, except the quintessential slacker after he makes it to his 30s. We don't see much of that archetype, so I'm diggin' it.
Labine is more versatile than Black, anyway, I think.
Labine is hilarious, Black is crap. Thats why this show is awesome and will stay

Why would the producer even think Jack Black would want to do a TV series? I think the producer picked him because he liked his performance in "The Reaper" and he fit the part. Just because he's fat doesn't make him a Jack Black wannabe lol.
Btw, didn't everyone say Jack Black was a Chris Farley wannabe?

To be fair to Tyler, I've been a fan of his since '97. Breaker High was a huge show in Canada at that time, and Tyler had the exact same Goofy, lovable, clumsy guy I've seen recently on TV. I don't think Jack Black was even Jack Black enough for anyone to try and rip him off at that time.
the main reason i like this show is because of Labine. He was great in Reaper and has carried that over. Jack Black is annoying and i would never have given a signle thought to watching this show had he been the lead. I almost did not watch the episode of Community that he was in, which he was etremely annoying in.

Tyler Labine is now funnier than Jack Black has been in many years. Rather watch him than Black any day of the week.
