Potential plot hole - SPOILERS

This could be a plot hole, or maybe I just assume to much of police investigators.

So after they found out about Timo - wouldn't their investigation into him reveal that he lived at the place where Peer has worked for years, and that they would have been there at the same time in 1986? And then they would note that Peer was on their list of cars to check.

I suppose with Timo dead they may not have done that in-depth an investigation.

What do you guys think?

Absolutely my thought too

I think they would have made the connection soon. Remember also that the girl in the video was the victim of the 1982 murder which was also linked to the red car, and Peer was in the video with her.

One of the interesting things with this film is the degree of open-endedness in the conclusion. The film finishes with Grimmer declaring the case closed, whilst Jahn claims that it is still open, feeling sure there were 2 men involved. Sommer seems to think he has got away with it, but we can't really be sure. May be some of the connections discussed above will be found by Jahn, or even Mittich at a later date.

I agree, plus I also felt that after Timo's death, the pregnant detective might have remembered seeing the white DVD case among his belongings as perhaps coming from the murderer's flat that she'd just visited. She might not have seen Timo's belongings of course, but another hour of investigation might have seen David's argument that there were two perpetrators bear fruit and see David solve the case...

On one hand, the idea that Peer got away with it is a standard thriller ending, probably intended to be thought-provoking. What might our own seemingly-normal neighbors be hiding?

But the bungling-police routine is a tired and unbelievable one, so for my own sanity I have to believe that the two competent detectives kept going until they found the second man.
