amateurish and low budget production

I was tempted to press the stop button while watching this film on DVD recently. I was put off by the film's utterly amateurish and low budget look. The strong lights and darks throughout reminded of a piece of advice all novice photographers are given, this being that one should avoid shooting in bright light and shooting subjects that are strongly backlit without the aid of flash and / or reflectors. I'd say a cheap camera was used and the budget was too low to be able to use lights and reflectors. I thought that the direction was awful. The interactions between the characters are so emotionally unengaging. Although some of the acting is fine, (that Danish fella who plays the rapist and killer, who I've seen in other films, IS a good actor) some of the actors were surely not even professional actors.

Since it's just, like, your opinion, man, I'll give you mine; and since all this *beep* on messages boards has no purpose, I'll back my opinion with film directing degree at Filmová a televizní fakulta Akademie múzických umění in Prague.

Photography is great, very unusual for a thriller of this kind and serves the story extremely well.

Directing is great, especially taking into consideration it lasts for more than 2 hours.

Next time press the stop button and don't bother posting.

P.S. My guess would be they used ARRI 235 camera; you tell me if it's cheap.

Very much agree. This is a terrifically well made film, beautifully photographed with some great performances.

The story is unusual in that it doesn't really focus on the victims or the perp, rather the accessory to the perp and the damaged family members and police officers, affected by the killer's crimes. It's not without its flaws, but The Silence is well worth a look.🐭

Spoilers, obvs.

Which characters did you want to have emotionally engaged interactions, OP? The young woman with her rapist? The mother and father who just found out their child was kidnapped and presumed dead? Timo with Peer, an enabler to a crime Timo came to regret so much he eventually killed himself, who murdered a second girl to 'send him a message' and bring about a reunion?

I think the performances were spot-on.

While I don't agree in the Photography issue, I agree 100% with the OP in EVERYTHING ELSE! Based on all the overrated user's and critic's reviews I thought I was watching the wrong movie...

Don't worry OP there's always a Nazi troll who comes to message boards (NO, let me repeat that)...MESSAGE BOARDS to state the obvious... that this is a (hummm) MESSAGE BOARD!!!!! and that everything write in here it's someone's opinion! right HERR HITLER ??
