Title

Not quite sure what the movie's title refers to. The best I can figure is it's the years of silence from Timo that Sommer endured, before he snapped and sent him a "message." Any other ideas?

Also, there's already a classic Bergman movie with this title. Why not come up with something original?

Edited to add: I just realized it's based on a novel with the same title, so that might answer my second question.

Few months later, but I'll post this in case you wander back in.

You're on the track with the title referring to Peer and Timo.

As David pointed out, the life of a pedophile is extremely lonely. You have to keep the most important aspect of your life a secret from everybody. You have no one to talk to, so even though you are surrounded by people, you might as well be the last person on earth. That loneliness is what drove Peer to send Timo the message.

But it all turned out for naught. Think about that final shot of Peer slowly closing the door to his apartment, his face crumbling into that anguished look. He thought he was finally going to have someone to share with again, but in the end, he remained trapped alone in the terrible silence of his apartment.

Thanks that helps me understand the title a little more.
