I'm not sure that Tom & Jerry was ever supposed to be more than 15 minute chunks of slapstick. But the mistake they made with this film is having the two interact with real actors and then devoting more time to the human story than to the cartoon characters.

The creation of the human drama and eventual resolution swallowed up the entire film and left Tom & Jerry as background noise.
