Could someone explain the scene in a car? *SPOILERS*

* SPOILERS ahead *

There was this scene that totally confused me. It's where Sepideh and Elly's
"fiance" started talking in his car after he arrived at the town. My English subtiles went as follows:

The fiance (F): She was not supposed to come here. When was the
accident?

Sepideh (S): We talk on the road.

F: Madam, stop confusing me. What is her name?

S: Elly.

F: Elly appears on her papers?

S: Elly is the teacher of my daughter.

Now, what on earth? lol Did I just watch it with bad subtitles or what was really going on?

reply

From what I gathered, Sepideh only knew about the name that Elly gave her. It might have been her nickname or something else. The fiance was surprised because he probably had identified her with another name.

reply

Thanks! I had tried to see the sence that way myself as well, but still way strange. He knew they were talking about his fiance because that's why he came to the town for, THEN asked "what's her name?" out of the blue.

reply

It's probably bad subtitles you had. but what he said was :
-she wasn't supposed to go up north at all, listen ma'am, don't play games with me(or more like be honest with me), when you saw her documents, what was her name in them?
he basically wanted to make sure they were talking about the same woman being injured. plus he probably knew the name 'Elly' was not her real name so he looked surprised after she said that she knew her by Ellie.
her name i believe stands for the lies that were being told. in Iranian culture, there's no such name as "Elly". It might be short for something like Elnaz or Elham, but it does not stand by itself in one's documents. Ellie didn't give them her entire name.

reply

Thank you, higherflyer3. :)

reply

Well, Elly is not a complete first name. It's an acronym for Persian names starting with "El", names like Elnaz, Elham, Elahe, Elmira and the likes. The kids call her Elly, but it's not a name so it can't be in her birth certificate. When the fiance asks:"What is her name?" he wants to know if Sepideh knows her full name, as a way of weighing their relationship.

reply

Sepideh must know her full name. Elly is her child's teacher. The kids presumably don't call her Miss Elly, or put Miss Elly on the report card. Also, if Elly confided with Sepideh over a period of months about troubles with her fiance, that shows a high level of intimacy. It is completely implausible that Sepideh would not know her name, which means she lied to the police earlier.

The other thing about this scene was a big goof,

The fiance's car was parked on the side of the road in a bit of dirt, not on the tarmac, behind his car was a pick up truck also parked into the dirt but the truck was parked sideways to the road whereas the fiances car was parked parallel to the road.

So they get in the car and have the conversation you describe. Then a crazy woman comes to the window and is angry with him for not moving on like he is in her way blocking the road. But this makes no sense because he is parked off the road in a dirt layby.

The other thing that is not right about this scene is that ahmed leaves her with this strange man in his car, Ahmed drives back to the house without waiting for them, leaving her on her own with him. She should have stayed in Ahmed's car and the fiancee followed them.

The other thing was that she was lying to him telling him she is in hospital with a coma and this lie is never picked up later on he never brings it up and it is never explained. Suddenly when he arrives at the house he wants to see "where she drowned".

You have to focus more and understand context clues when watching movies.

If you look at the scene where they parked off the road, the fiance did not park correctly. He was parallel parked while others were parked the right way. The "crazy" woman's car was being blocked by the fiance's car and she could not back up properly. That's why she went crazy.

Ahmed drove ahead so he can warn the others, he explicitly told Sepideh to go with the fiance so that he can be first to arrive at the villa.

It was understood that she lied at first that she was in the hospital but on the way to the villa told the fiance that she drowned. This was also mentioned by Ahmed when talking with his friends.

reply

We're supposed to accept that traffic there is chaotic, but the angry woman's silver SUV wasn't blocked from backing up. The scene was rushed and it's a goof.

It's a goof unless I go deep and construct a scenario that the angry woman in green was waiting for the junky white pickup (with the right blinker on) to park next to her, but the fiancé's parallel parked car was in the way.

reply

Exactly. How many holes can a movie have before you rate it 1 out of 10? Because that's my rating...

reply

Someone else mentioned this, but you should have picked up on the scene on the beach where the police are asking her name, and they say "Elly," and the police ask "What was her full name?" --and the police then give 3 examples "Elham" and a couple others. As someone else said, "Elly" is a nickname. That's all they know about her…bizarre.
