Spoil this movie for me. Please.

Just watched The Imposter, went online and saw that there was a previous fictional version that was this movie. Cannot find what it says the family did in the movie. Did they kill him? From the "well, we don't want to spoil it for you" descriptions, it seems like it's saying that the brother, Nick Stahl's character, did. Did he, did the mom know, rest of the family, what happens? Never going to have an opportunity to see it and I'm curious what the movie supposes happened in real life. Spoilers for this movie are nowhere. I mean, it's the goddamn Internet, I should be able to find a breakdown but there just isn't. Please, by all means, spoil it for me; that's what I'm asking for.

Personally, from The Imposter, I think the brother probably killed him; last person to talk to him, tried to make it seem like he was still alive, and most distant when he miraculously showed up. Don't think the rest of the family knew though, maybe the mom, but I doubt it.

But the fictional version, I want to know what happens.

In the movie version, it's implied that the brother probably killed the boy but the mom and sister knew about it. The FBI dredged a swamp where the mom used to visit regularly but didn't find anything. Also, in the movie, the boy was believed to be a runaway because he was due in court the day he disappeared. I don't recall that being the case in the real story.
