Greed

I have a difficult time respecting treasure hunters as I so often hear them speak more about the monetary value of their finds rather than the historical significance of the wrecks and objects. I just see a great lack of respect for the men that died on these sites when the vessels went down. I understand that money needs to be made to continue finding the wrecks, but I would really like to see more focus on history and less on money.

If you don't like it, don't watch. Besides one of the project managers in the episode "The Legend" told every crew member to have respect for anything they uncover because of the "1,100" men who may have been laid to rest here. Does this satisfy you now?

reply

Wow, coming off a bit harsh, aren't we? I do like the show. I was just saying that I wish they would come from a different angle on these shows. I want to see more history and less drama. The show is still good and I will continue to watch it.

I'm not coming off a bit harsh. I just strongly dislike PC sheep.

reply

I do believe you are. That's okay. Anyway, I am hardly a "PC sheep." As a lover of history I feel a certain way. I finally was able to watch The Legend and was very happy to see the several respectful remarks made. At the time of my OP I had not yet seen that episode.

I would to stand up and state that I stand corrected in regard to my OP. After watching last night's episode I am now a firm believer that they do care greatly and deeply about the history and loss of life on these wrecks. I have never been happier to be proven incorrect in my assumptions and observations.

Yea, but the vessel they were out wouldn't have been carrying 1,100 men... I thought it was a confirmed ship from the mid 1700's so like maybe 300+ men?

But yea, I know what you mean.

EDIT: Watching more of this series, the legend apparently had a crew of 900... That is just insane. I can't believe they could provide that much food and water for a crew to operate. Very impressive.

reply

I disagree.

The entire crew and the company that sponsors these exhibitions not only have respect for what they are finding, they have to operate with complete discipline when excavating any vessel down to what they can pull as evidence to confirm if the vessel is what they are seeking to reporting to the respective governments if human remains have been found.

It costs money to operate these excavations, so attention to time and detail are paramount to their tasks. I've yet to see one episode where the crew talks about being in it just for the money. Each member has a specific skill set and task and it makes me admire them as professionals that they are so focused and dedicated to doing what they love.

If you want to whine about "greedy" professionals may I suggest writing a letter to any choice of those financial shows that non-chalantly talk about the "ups and downs" of the economy as it only pertains to their personal assets and invenstment portfolios? I always cringe when they make comments about how laying off thousands of lower-management people in order for their precious stock price to jump so they can make a sizeable margin call. THAT'S GREED.
