I can't believe the mother wouldn't let the children visit the cemetery on the way to the airport. A bit harsh no?

I think the point of the film is that life goes on,and that was the point behind the ending.

You have to be on time for the plane or it goes without you... fairly plausible reason. Besides, he's still going to be there when they get back...
