BK is supposed to be a gay man?

I was under the impression that homosexuality was illegal in Botswana. In which case it would be very strange to have an openly gay character like that.

LGBT is and was illegal in most countries including the USA,Britian,Europe and elsewhere unto just recently because of religion, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist, obviously.

This wonderful story shows oppression for the evil it is. Women don't have it as easy as this story makes it either in many cases. The addition of a feminine man who survives and is strong and happy inspite of the evils of the society is the whole point of the story,as it applies to all oppressed people, along with winning the day over oppression in general. The story is lighthearted, but also very serious at times. Mostly it is about bravery, but told with such an entertaining flare we forget what it is sometimes is asking us to see. It is very palatable.

So I believe that is why the author saw fit to include not just a gay man,but one that is effeminate, which is a small minority. However since the begining of time those men as well as masculine woman have taken the brunt of the torture, oppression and evils in general because they cannot hide like the regular Joe's and Jane's ,which compose the great majority of LGB people.
We just see these that can not hide. Therefore we have stereotypes.

So he is not just another metaphor, but more so a character that serves to mirror our heroine. Both strong, loving, happy individuals who refuse to take the injustices of their society sitting down. And it is essential also that they love their Botswana. As is stated many times, especially by our heroine.

Oh and just to be clear. LGBT itself isn't illegal...the act of making love is,or sex if you will. So he is only brought "to justice" in Botswana,as in many places,if someone feels the need to prove he is having a relationship. Just being,as long as he never acts on it isn't illegal. So the hideous nature of this is....be alive, lonely and utterly alone,or lie to a person and bring another into your lie to stay safe. Marry the opposite sex,lie...or be alone and celibate,..deny love.

Many do. People have "beards". Sometimes in countries like ours and that long ago gay and lesbians married to stay safe. It was the courage of those that couldn't hide that caused Stonewall here and similar advances in other places that brought about some evolution.
And of course in Europe,America and elsewhere AIDS revealed a plethora of LGB people thst seemed "like everyone else". That horror did bring about this one positive outcome. Sadly, it took a plague to show society that LGB people are like everyone else. However in Africa it found its way only into the heterosexual population,so that lesson wasn't learned. And western evangelists have gone to Africa to preach the death penalty and have helped to create laws using Christianity, exactly like it is used by ISIS in the middle east.

But here,it allowed for some of the lies to fall from people's beliefs. Not all however,of course.
I hope that helps..I probably went on too much. You may know much of this..hopefully if that is the case, some other person will benefit.
Be well...
