Jim needed to wake Aurora up

Had Jim not awakened Aurora, he would have never been able to vent the room and save the ship. Gus would have been awakened by the ship's systems and still died knowing the problem was in engineering, Jim would have found the problem but since he needed to open the outer doors manually there would have been no one to vent the system.

So, in a nutshell Aurora was meant to wake up or everyone on the ship would have died.

That was predictable since the beginning

That's exactly the problem lots of people (especially on this board) have with the movie: the two-man repair job was too tidy a solution to the immorality of Jim's choice

I don't have a problem with it, because I view the ACTUAL resolution to be empathy, not mechanical rocket-science. The repair job was just a way to have Aurora truly understand Jim's situation, and realize that she could forgive and even love him despite what he did

Same w/ Gus: on the surface, he was expositional character not only because he gave them access to the ship's damage, but because he planted the "drowning man" notion in Aurora's head.

He killed her either way. One was just slower.
