why did they remake it?

i know its better in most ways but still why would they bother to remake the whole series like this? it baffles me.

Because the first series (which I refer to as Anime1) was created when only 30% of the manga existed. Rather then put the series through many filler storylines for the manga to catch-up (NARUTO, INU-YASHA) or end the adaptation incomplete (KARE KANO), the manga authoress told the anime creators to complete the adaptation with a different scenario. A lot of viewers were dissatisfied with the results (not me) and yearned for an adaptation that was truer to the manga material.
By the time the manga was about 85% done, they decided to remake the series. They condensed the first Act (Reole, Nina, Lab 5, Hughes'...you know, reunion with Izumi, and Greed's kidnapping of Al), figuring viewers were already familiar with it from Anime1, then slowed the pace down for the new stuff, coinciding its ending broadcast with the manga's own conclusion in publication.
