The parts were greater than the sum

This must have looked great on paper, but as a whole the entire movie felt flat, forced and contrived.
Dorky girl with the cool parents starts dating the high school cool guy is movie trope 101. I am a fan of the eras music and the parents kept dropping bands that were very vanilla. The parents came across as one of those parents that are desperately trying to hang on to their faded youth (I cringed hard whenever they dropped a band name). There is nothing worse than parents that think their music taste was edgy, when the bands that they referred to were white bread (they could have at least found a worn "goo" tee for the guy to wear). They had zero chemistry, and towards the end I just didnt care whether she lived or died.
The guys band was embarrassing to listen to (they should have dubbed a real singer), and the hollywood ending was so predictable (walking to the light, then a miraculous recovery!!, puhhleez).
