Was anyone bored while watching this?
I was actually pretty bored while watching this movie. I liked some parts such as gramp's speech and the family's Labor Day party, but other than that, this movie was pretty boring.

shareit was actually quite cringe worthy, I predict a swift fall in the rating, soon..
shareUnfortunately I have to agree. I watched this solely because Chloe Moretz is highly praised and I wanted to see something where she's the lead. I guess it would be too unrealistic to expect that she could singlehandedly turn a movie in which director had no clear sense of direction. I'd have to agree with Anthony Lane of "New Yorker" that "well before the end, even loyal viewers will be begging her to hurry up and choose".
My first problem with this flick is that it claims a supernatural device but doesn't really use it. Once you cross into "out of body" shifted reality you are expected to do something visually and dramatically striking and not just turn it into a narrator. Narrator is almost always boring (unless you are Jane Campion doing "The Piano"). She could do anything, be in anguish, jumping from place to place to retrace her memories, out of control, switching moods etc. etc. The sky is the limit when a ghost is the real protagonist.
Second problem - "music video" parts. Doing that outside of the musical genre is justified only if you are presenting a significant original soundtrack and lyrics are telling part of the story ("Once" comes to mind). It kicked me out of the flow every time and got me waiting for the fluff to end. This includes the choice of the cello music which is by and large an acquired taste without anything immediately captivating. At the very least they needed to use Yo Yo Ma's renditions of say popular movie themes and pick some classical passages that don't descend into that unpleasant bass section.
Third problem - killing off the whole family in a quite simple car accident with modern day cars (and we see them with seat belts) is way over the top unbelievable. They either needed to push the time frame decades back (no smart phones) or come up with a medical sub-plot/drama or engineer a very hard accident (big truck, fire etc.) or leave someone alive or make irresponsible parents with the family riding without belts, father getting tipsy etc. They could have even played a game with disoriented ghost with fuzzy memories thinking that they are all dead but they are not.
Fourth problem - lack of real suspense and momentum building. Of course you know that she's not going to die. The drama and surprise needed to be about "the process". Jane Campion comes to mind again and the brilliant "What a death!, What a chance!, What a surprise!". Something like that could have been done since we are already brought into the shifted reality and her "other self" could have been the one getting depressed, attempting suicide and then "reverting". Even directly quoting Campion's work would have been a far lesser sin than this lack of momentum.
I haven't seen this yet, but I have read the book.
The novel is this way too, it starts out very good, drags in the middle, and ends too abruptly.
Yet, its still a decent read.
I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus.
Didn't he discover America?
Penfold, shush.
If you are not a teenage girl then this is agony to watch. A trite, infantile, slushy romance most usually found in a 14 year olds fantasy diary. Chloe moretz looked hot though. Not enough.
share*hand raised* me
While Moretz is not as bad as Stewart, she was bland and boring when not crying, the angst-ridden teenager character did not help...her best friend was a much better actress and I found myself wishing she had gotten the lead...
The Adam actor I enjoyed, though, along with the rest of the cast.
The story was just incredibly thin, the love story not really convincing (the love story in Moonrise Kingdom - although younger children...- or The First Time, or or or... are all much more believable!), and reminded me of Twilight in its 'oh he's so hot and I'm so plain why does he like me I don't fit in I'm a - talented - insecure whiner...
This was rather pointless and did not draw me in. Up to the accident it did, and for a bit after, but then it went downhill, fast...
Had to keep advancing the video hoping it would get better but it did not. Horrible sentimental pap, would have been improved with some other worldly special effects instead of her running around the hospital not bumping into anything
