The lovely bones, anyone?

First off; Beautiful film, I'm a fan.

Second, was this film somewhat reminiscent of 'The lovely bones' for anyone else? It's not a very popular film, but it's captivating and draws up some powerful emotions, just like this one..

I don't think is that similar. Total different tone and aesthetics. Total different plot even though both movies present a young girl living out of her body. Is batman Reminiscent of ironman because both movies present a billionaire who is also a superhero?

I prefer the lovely bones.

You got that backwards. Iron Man came after Batman. Either way though, that argument would actually help what the OP is saying.

Depends on which movie iteration of the characters you are familiar with. The Mike Nolan "Batman," which is arguably more popular than the Tim Burton version, is "newer" than Robert Downey, Jr.'s "Iron Man."

And yes, I'm being pedantic.

First, you mean Christopher Nolan, who wrote and directed the three recent Batman movies, and not Mike Nolan who is involved in sports.

Second, Batman was created before Iron Man.

Third, even using your 'argument' about movie iterations, Iron Man (2008) came out after Batman Begins (2005), not the other way around. So no, Batman still came first.

Yeah, sorry I Didn't mean to compare films..

One just reminded me of the other. Regardless I agree.. The lovely bones is better ;)

This film also reminded me of The Lovely Bones. Actually, there are a number of similarities. In both films, the soul/spirit of a young girl either dead or dying/seriously injured left her body and witnessed what happened to her family and those close to her. Mia was not really dead but the idea was the same.

Both are films based on YA novels and so in both, boyfriends were the most important - far more so, for example, than parents and family members. In this film, Mia saw the deaths of her parents and younger brother but found the will to live because the boyfriend still loved her. In the other film, the family of Susie Salmon was all but destroyed and broken up by her disappearance: her mother couldn't cope with it and left the family to pick fruit in California. Yet when the girl finally was able to "move on" like Jennifer Love Hewitt's ghosts into the light, the last thing she wanted to do on earth was to kiss the Sikh boy (she was killed before their first date) through the body of another girl (eww).

Uhm...re: "The Lovely Bones"

A Young Adult novel!?

Not hardly. "The Lovely Bones" is a very disturbing, very mature novel which topped many Best Seller lists (including the NY Times) for months. I would advise against the novel being read by any adolescent not in a position to discuss its story, themes and characterizations with a strongly supportive adult. "The Lovely Bones" is not a Stephen King horror story, it is a too true, too intimate story of rape and murder, anger and hatred, for adolescents.

"If I Stay is a young adult novel by Gayle Forman published in 2009. The storey follows 17-year-old Mia Hall as she deals with the aftermath of a catastrophic car accident involving her family. Wikipedia"

It's the name of a genre, it has nothing to do with a personal opinion about what's appropriate for certain age groups. Yong Adult (YA) books, are an entire genre and section of books.

Who decides what "category" a book is relegated to?

I don't see this as the same, while I loved the Lovely bones BOOK...I hated the film. I enjoyed If I stay. Lovey bones was based on what happens to the people left behind after they lose a loved one, if I stay was based on the life of the one clinging onto life. Both about death but the story's distinctively different.

I enjoyed this film.

The Lovely Bones -- didn't like; I had lots of problems with *that* film.

The lovely bones was a masterpiece by peter jackson and i even can't compare this movie to that as it was week at least that is my opinion and the whole rate is becasue of the start actress and the story is adopted from novel (may be the novel was better) , but when i watched this it remind me another great movie which is The Invisible (2007) .

reply

not at all, I loved the Lovely Bones, this movie annoyed me... her whole family was dying and all she could think of was her boyfriend, she barely thought about her family

reply

Don't think they are the same. I actually think The Lovely Bones was far more beautiful.

This is okay. The books are harder to judge. Besides both being YA they are very different.

She didn't focus on Adam, where are people getting this from? She OBVIOUSLY reacted to Teddy & her parents scenes as well as her grandfather.

If anything, she was ready to leave Adam behind & even said goodbye.,

As for the Lovely Bones comparison, I get the same vibe but it is entirely different context.

Both films were equally good but I feel that the lovely bones is more at ease with the story and scenes in the movie. If I Stay had a lot of fast pace scenes and definitely use the 'everybody dies or suffer' method which is usually guarantee a tear shedding or two.

reply

Totally agree with you randomness.
At one point during the movie she even says "goodbye Adam". She was ready to leave him, but changed her mind. One could argue that Kim's statement "you still have family" was a big factor that made her stay.

Same here!

Being a young girl, I think the film justified the fact that she was somewhat 'fickle' or indecisive as to which path to take. But I never fealt like she gave Adam preference..

I hated the fact that the granddad told her it would be okay if she wanted to cross-over; It's like the had already lost the fight.. But I digress!

reply

I think the movie did a poor job of depicting why Mia decided to stay.

To wit: In the end, Mia realized that her choice was between "leaving" with her family, and "staying" with her music and, possibly, Adam. The flashbacks illustrated that at the time of the accident, she was moving away from her life as a daughter and towards her life as a musician, a woman, a lover. She chose to continue moving forward.

the lovely bones is far better.
