why do the contestants always announce their race?

"I'm sicilian/cuban"

Well whoop-de-doo, I'm not. Are they encouraged by the producers to announce their race, is it some requirement to be on the show, or do people in general do this these days? Not once have I ever met someone IRL and heard them say what race they were.

I think they mention their ethnicity because it sets the tone of the type of dishes they could make or are most familiar with. Like if a contestant is Jamaican and Chinese then they might prepare a Caribbean dish. My only gripe is when they keep mentioning it over and over again, but I don't mind when their ethnic background is brought up during their introductions.

Sicilian, Cuban, Jamaican, Chinese, Korean,Russian etc. are not races. They are nationalities.

I think the producers have them talk about their ethnic backgrounds and whatever sets them apart. Notice how whenever they say what they are or where they come from they put the stereotypical music in the background? I don't think it's something the contestants always want to do. Lol

This show is so predictable. Every time a contestant says that they're Mexican (or of another Hispanic origin) the camera immediately zooms to Aaron Sanchez's reaction like it matters. C'mon now Chopped, surprise us sometimes.

reply

Yeah, They do the same when they have Italian chefs and zoom in on the Italian judges; they seems to thrive on stereotypes. Lol

I love when the chefs surprise them and perform beyond the stereotypes the production thrives on.
